10/22 project
« on: December 11, 2021, 09:23:23 PM »
Let me start out by saying I've never done this before, put together a gun that is, but I want to build a 10/22 and mainly with aftermarket parts. My main question is, should I buy just a receiver which I've found a couple for around $150-$160 or should I buy a new gun, Sportsmans Warehouse has 1 for $240, take the parts I need then sell whats left, stock, barrel, etc?
Is there even much resale value in those parts? if not, I would probably just buy a receiver.
I recently put a Boyds stock on a Ruger American and I've had very little interest in the original stock, don't really want to be stuck with a bunch of 10/22 parts I'll never use.

I'd probably get one of the aftermarket receivers, they all look pretty good.  If possible maybe find an older 10/22.  I compared mine from the early 70's to a neighbor's made around 2010, and hers had a few issues.  Tolerances didn't feel as tight, had more issues with feeding and jamming than the older one.

When I built my Ultimate 10/22 . I picked up a Ruger 10/22 target and sold off everything except the action . Then bought every VQ part available,  sent the bolt off for custom work , threw a Carbon barrel on it , and bought a custom stock . Hindsight I would have started with a Kidd Action . Didn't make enough  selling the original parts .

It’s impossible to sell leftover 10/22 parts in my experience. I’ve got a pile of 10/22 factory stocks and I can’t even give them away.

I have built several 10/22s.  Love those things.  I might be confused though.  Why buy a factory gun if you are going to replace the receiver?  It's the serial numbered part and requires the ffl transfer.  If you are going to go that expense just buy the receiver you want and build from there.    I will say all of mine with factory relievers shoot just fine.

I decided to go with the Brownell receiver which I just ordered along with some other parts. Just need to find a stock and barrel I like, seems like everything I like is out of stock or beyond my budget.

Check out Beyer barrels out of Forks.   Picked one up awhile back for a light weight  pack gun.  Very good quality.

Thanks but I found both a stock (Boyds) and barrel (Green Mtn) I like and sent them my $$$. Now I wait, like a kid at Xmas.

Green mountain makes good products.   The blue gun I posted has a 20 inch gm barrel on it.   More accurate than I am for sure.  Good luck with the build and be sure to post updates.    Fair warning.  Once you get the bug the addiction grows.   I have several of these now and always swapping parts.  I think they are just my new Legos.

I have a Fajen Legacy stock on mine with a tactical solutions fluted/threaded barrel with their brake also. It’s cool and a tack driver.

Parts and pieces are starting to roll in, hoping to have this put together by Xmas, only thing I haven't picked out yet is a scope. Just so Mrs. Angus doesn't strangle me I should probably keep this in the $125 price range or less, any suggestions? Its primarily going to be a plinker but my other .22 has taken its share of grouse and a few coyotes and I'm sure this 1 will too.

Mueller Optics scopes were  a 10/22 fan favorite a while back. That’s what I got
