the wildlife lens we all should have
« on: May 05, 2009, 06:57:40 PM »
Check out this link for the biggest telephoto Canon has ever made:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800622963-USE/Canon_2527A001_Super_Telephoto_1200mm_f_5_6L.html#specifications

Ha!  Only problem is, it's about $119,500 over many of our lens budgets - and that's for a used model!  And we'd need a sherpa to caddy it around for us.  And Pope Shawn wouldn't be able to get it 10 miles off the road up into the high country to use it on his trophy rams.

Not sure what tripod would be up to the task.  It would be sweet, though.

I think they only made 10 of those lenses.  Those are great.  I'll take the small brother though, the 800mm f5.6.  I've heard it's actually portable about like the 500mm f4...

Yes, Shawn - a good friend of mine from the Seattle area has had the 800 for about 6 months now.  We shoot together sometimes, so I've handled it and seen it in action.  It is actually rather light and compact, at least compared to my 400 and to the 600f4.  And  AF even works with a 1.4tc on his 5DMarkII body with no problems.  It is a very helpful lens to have.  With the 1.4 on his 40D it brings 'em in real close.

it seems odd to me as a not so seasoned photographer that the dude taking the photo of the guy shooting the $120k lense couldn't use a flash to light up the guys face a little. stuck in the shadows...rookie mistake.

I think a Jeep would make a good tripod for that thing... You wouldn't need to leave the road to get pics of a gnat on a _________'s _______ from two miles away. (Use your imagination with the blanks!)  :chuckle:
