Orcas Island Deer
« on: December 16, 2021, 03:26:26 AM »
I had did a "survey" on this Island for the Population on this Island since 1996.
I went out, day and night,,looked, scouted for deer every fall up too 2005.
I'd had now realized There IS more Deer than people on this one Island!

I have hiked, driven & been over hill and dale, all over this Island!
From farms, to the State parks lands, up too, (and back again
From the Ferry) to the cabin in EAST sound. Went to a local gravel pit(a big place with alot of limestome rock!) & then off the beton path and then onto a mini golf course close by & back onto west Sound hiway ...
Ohh not to mention at the local Dump on a road the back forty (40)

Over Turtle-back Mountain and up Houghton mountian and back again.

From East-Sound to West Sound and up those County Powerline ridgelines which runs the lenght to Canada (to the northside of this Island).
If one does NOT know this Island It's now,,, Not Center firearm lands... TOO BAD There is Alot of Farms here who still raises Cattle/cows.

I have been on the local hiwy(Horseshoe Hiway) at 2a.m., spotted at least 20 deer along that stretch of roadway per mile, (we had gotten on a 12:20 A.M. west bound ferry to Orcas, Was working, brought 40 gallons of paint to restore cabin's) and deer were in the road & seen what is beyond the fence lines. We had to just SLOW DOWN... They were really dangerous for our travel to the cabin into East Sound! I have seen some Trophy Blacktails one this Cabin property as well. Out-Of-season BIG boys!!! They have Apples there LOL
One thing in LIFE is,,, We cannot out run time!

The population is devastated by the AHD outbreak this summer. When did you survey last?

@cryder, please translate. I'm guessing there's a few forkers still around but could benefit from clarity.

Ah the good ole days.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

That was going to be my question as well. Deer population on Decatur dropped a lot this year.

I heard from a buddy who hunts orcas every year that 90% of the herd is gone.

My brother works out there a lot and he said the same thing, the herd has been decimated. Very few deer left all within a year.

It’s all over out there, in the evening you could drive from Friday harbor to Roche and see 50-60 deer easy and at least 15+ were bucks.  This past summer I did that drive and saw 3.  It’s bad up there.

Been on the island twice and seen deer both time. Just to bad the island is almost entirely private land and difficult to get permission. Lots of nice deer on San Juan as well.
God Bless,
Scott
