Rant - waterfowl wastage and trash on public land
« on: December 18, 2021, 05:54:00 PM »
I have a routine of letting the dog find cripples during less busy times on public land so she gets exercise and uses her nose. We find birds and see trash - picking both up as space allows. This afternoon takes the cake however, and I just have to get this off my chest!

We stumbled into a spot where some jackwagons obviously spent the morning. About 30 fresh empty shells littering the ground, along with an energy drink can, half eaten sandwich, a half dead greenhead, dead teal, and dead headless pintail hen. The dead ones were stuffed in a root wad of the log these clowns were using for cover and obviously left to rot. Not sure where the dog collected the mallard, but right in that vicinity. She found one more crippled greenhead on the way out that was far enough away from the trash heap that I suspect it probably sailed on them. I picked up what I could fit in my pockets and put the ducks on the strap.

Anyway, it really sucks to see this and it bums me out to see and know some hunters treat our public land this way. It is an eyesore and these areas are used by the non-hunting public. The trash and wastage reflects poorly on all hunters.

Not sure what else to say except that if you value and want to maintain the opportunity to hunt on public land, please pick up after yourself. As far as leaving birds you shot, I am at a loss for words!

Good for you on cleaning up after the dbags.

Unfortunately, there are very few youtube videos explaining proper etiquette to waterfowlers. They fully understand 3 1/2” shells, and bird piles, and selfies, but leaving a place better than they found it eludes them...

Thank you for the clean up. Honestly though, I gave up doing that. Felt as though I was was enabling another group of useless persons. Take care of my own now. Getting old with a 'care less' attitude is great.

Hate to hear of yet another area and group of "hunters?" That can't pick up after themselves however I guess you can put me in the group with me thread, got tired of picking up other people's trash because they think others are their mothers, maids or general house keepers for what it's worth it isn't only hunters and fishers.

Was just in Moses Lake visiting and brought my dogs to the gloyd seeps outside of town, some of the places were total dumps and dead birds all over, couldn't believe it, literally thought I was in a dump, very discouraging/disturbing, clearly isn't all sportsman's leaving the trash though, good on you though, I had thought why can't WDFW partition some of the prison crews to clean up these places once a year, highway byways aren't exactly public and hunting playgrounds, better uses elsewhere.

Ya funny most of the trash is filled with modelo/ bud light chelado/ corona cans and bottles. Never use to be like that AT ALL. Wonder what changed. Huh…

Did it used to be Busch light, natty light and PBR? Sorry for your loss.  I used to go there in the early 90s, most users weren't stewards then either.

That's a popular spot for dumping pitbulls too. Cut up dogs with poorly placed bullet wounds.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Have done the same in that area. Always a worry picking up someone else’s bird. Not sure if it has lead in it or not. Same with the shell hulls. You don’t want to get checked with spent hulls on you with lead ‘markings’ on them. Since I use 16 gauge nearly exclusively, it is seldom a worry on the hulls, but it is a concern.
People can be, well, ‘trashy’.

I was just wondering about that, also, how an enforcement office might question the person cleaning up the hulls. I would hope they would be understanding about it. Incidentally, I hunt 16ga also.

This showed up on the Duvall community Facebook page this morning. This is the stuff that makes for a huge black eye for hunters. It doesn’t matter If it was or wasn’t hunters. It’s presumed to be and that’s enough for the black eye.

:fire.:

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

My argument would be that I am NOT in possession of toxic shot, but only of shells. It is hard to imagine a warden being pissy enough to give you a hard time with a bunch of garbage in your possession, but...  :dunno:

He had stated he took the birds as well. If you have A string of birds, a shotgun, and empty hulls, well, they will figure you were the one to get them.
Leaving birds reminds me of EWa a number of years ago. Guy came into the butcher shop with a dead quail not knowing how to clean it. Makes me wonder if the morons that left the birds did not know what to do with them? Easy enough to ‘YouTube’ it, but they would have to be willing to get their hands bloody.
Perhaps they were surprised that when they fell they were not clean, in a tray, and covered with plastic wrap?
Cuterebra are NOT cute!
