I'd have talked to the next higher up until I got results. Them telling you that you couldn't return a firearm due to their mistake is BS. It's nice that you bought your son two shotguns. You should take the first one back. Make sure you get the name of the guy who originally told you it was a 28". Get the name of the firearms manager, get the store manager's name, get his manager's name, on up the ladder until someone takes care of it.

I bought a gun last year from sportsman’s and swore I’d never do it again.  Semi automatic 22 (assault) so I had to go through the rigamarole twice.   Somehow they’ve managed to hire the only people in cowlitz county unfamiliar with firearms    I have a bergara bxr in my cart currently that they are the only ones that can get it and I’m torn  whether I want to go thru that again     Tried to get them to ship it to my local gun shop but no luck

I think you are sol...it clearly states that once you leave with the firearm it is yours...period. I blew it by not checking the box or I would have seen it was the wrong size. That is ultimately on me as the buyer. I'm sure you will find someone to take it off your hands but still unfortunate. Now if it was the wrong firearm in the box that would be different but the cross check the serial numbers from the box and the gun.

I’m surprised that selling it for $260 that you still have it  :chuckle:
I’d be posting it on the gun board here

Similar thing happened to my dad, except it was the 2 3/4 chamber vs 3 in. So I was stuck with a 2 3/4 inch wing master for 40 years. Wasn’t a big deal until the switch to steel shot. That was at Coast to Coast...

The 26 vs 28 inch barrel isn’t worth losing a lot of sleep over in my opinion, with pro’s and con’s either way.

Did they have any steel shot in stock?

I was in the Federal Way store once and a guy was just about through the paperwork process. He must have been just about done because they had already called in the background check. Anyways, they had the rifle he was buying leaning up against the rack and another employee walked by and kicked accidentally. I swear that gun hit five different things before hitting the floor. There was damage to the front sight, and a couple of divots and dings on the stock and action. The buyer asked them to get him another one, and they told him that was the only one they had in the system. And they couldn't change it anyways because the background check had xxx-xxx serial number and it was already a proceed. Guy said a whole bunch of colorful words and stormed out.

I wonder how they deal with that process? Guy is confirmed for a proceed on a certain specific rifle, and then walks away without purchasing? Anybody ever been involved in that?

I had to have a 26" barrel on my Beneli and then I screwed in an extended choke and didn't end up with a 26" shotgun! Didn't even notice the extra length.

When Cabela's still had the gun library. I ordered a specific Beretta with a 30" barrel. Found one in MN or WI called and asked if the add was correct "Yep it's a 30". I paid the shipping to Lacy, got my call that it was in. Made the trip to pick it up and hot to trot. When I saw the box, it said 28" now I'm not happy. Opened the box and hard case my jaw dropped it was a 24". Told them I did not want it, they said you ordered it. Yes, but I ordered a 30" not 24 they started getting huffy with me, so I started to leave. The Store manager was called, I explained the situation with the armed with the back east gun manager's name. They offered me another Beretta almost 1K more on my end, nope I said and tried to leave. They stopped me and said I could have the one in stock for the same price, so I have a 28' with 1" extended tubes.

I feel your pain.

I bought a Benelli SBE3 12-28 3.5 LEFT HANDED shotgun from Sportmans a few weeks ago.  I go in do the paper work, ask the gentlemen behind the counter, this is a left hand correct? He says yes it is, Your lucky these are hard to come by.  I said I know this is why I ultimately bought it.

Bring it home and leave it in the box for a few days and decide to go show my buddy and put it together there.  We get it together and he looks at me and I look at him.  It ain't no fing left handed.  Go grab my receipt and nothing on my receipt says Left hand.   I am sol on this 1.  Cannot return it nor exchange it.

So with that being said I am with the OP in saying its my fault i didn't verify that, but when it was sitting in the box I just didn't pay attention to how the stock was laying.  Went out pheasant hunting yesterday and did a little skeet shooting as well and they only complaint is how I have to push the safety opposite.  I'll get used to it but it did cost me a few birds trying to push the safety off.  My son will be happy cuz when he grows out his 20 gauge he can have this 1 and ill get the shotgun of my dreams finally.

Thanks for the replies all. I would have pitched a fit if I had ordered the Stoeger in 28" and it came in something else, especially if I had already payed for it and it was only being delivered to the store for the free shipping. Thanks for making me feel better. My wife feels better knowing I'm not the only man who has had this or a similar issue happen to them. I should have looked at the box and didn't so I take some of the blame but in this case there were 3 associates who got it wrong as well. My son will enjoy opening it piece by piece then having to read the directions to put it together... with my help  :chuckle:
God Bless,
Scott

Overall I think they and you did the best you could..sure you could habe double checked and hindsights perfect.  From their point of view, based on elapsed time I can see why exceptions can't me made from a liability standpoint.  Imo, bottom line your kid gets a new shotty under the tree. The rest is background noise in the big picture.

Wife preferred the extra length on her OU so I picked up a pair of Briley external chokes. I am curious if they offered that option (external choke) to you?

Not once has the ATF asked me for a serial number during a NICS check, only for the type of firearm ie long gun! So IMO Cabelas was full of sh!t!!!
