Sherman Hunt #1
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:16:21 AM »
Headed up to Sherman for 4 days last week with my cousin to see if we could locate a good bear.  Was a little disappointed in the green up in the area we were in.  Seems like the grass is just starting to grow, and most of the brush is just starting to bud.  No fresh sign on any of the grassy hills we normally see fall bears on, but there was plenty of sign from last year.  Saws tons of deer both muley and whities and even chased some turkeys while the bear hunting was slow.  Had one tom wake us up at 4:30 gobbling his head off 200 yards above camp.  We scrambled out of our cots and threw on our camo but couldn't get him to come closer than 75 yards.  He then took off with his hens never to be seen again that day.  Also saw a ton of moose sign compared to previous years.  Seems they are expanding every year into new areas up here.  Didn't see any on the hoof but got close a couple times.  One thing we found plenty of was ticks!  Cousin managed 10 ticks on him after one hike!  Hate those little *censored*s.

We did meet up with two good guys from Vancouver who were up trying to get a bear as well.  Ended up BS'ing with them for quite some time and they weren't seeing anything either.  Buddy of there's had the tag a couple years ago and they seen 9 bears in 2 days but everything was a lot greener that year.  Overall a good scouting trip, just need the hills to green up a little and I'll be in business.

Good luck bud! I think the winter put everything behind schedule a bit but if ya stick with it, the bears will come.

You are too early...best hunting is the last two weeks of May. Many bear are still in dens over here....we hunt NE WA area nearly every day of spring turkey and we just saw our first bear the other day...hope this helps....good luck.     :twocents:

I'm planning on hitting it hard the last 2 weeks of the season.  I have off May 21, 22, and 23rd as well as May 27th thru the 31st.  We'll see what happens.

I agree..I saw some old sign but Winter was a little later...On the Kettle River Side of Sherman Unit I have seen bears as early as Last week of April.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!
