Do you light yourself on fire that often?
Some people don't tolerate wool on skin well, my wife being one, but I have always had wool cloths of some sort. They work well.

One of the main reasons that I went back to wool, merino, for base layers, is the STINK of synthetic. I smell a lot better after a few days when wearing merino base layers, and that is good when I can't put clean clothes on every day. Also I think that it is warmer.
