Jumping a mule deer buck
« on: January 11, 2022, 03:50:45 PM »
What is your strategy for when you jump a mule deer buck out of its bed? Do you face into the wind and look for them? Do they go in the opposite direction of the wind? Do they circle around most of the time?

My experience is that they come out of their bed moving...

Maybe it's just the bigger bucks, but it seems once they decide to get up for something, unless it's another deer, they're gone.

Seems like if I jump them and they smell me, they are gone gone. No stopping no turning back, just gone. If they hear me but don’t smell me, they’ll run out a ways and try to figure what I am. If they see me, usually they’ll run out a ways and try to confirm with their eyes what they saw.

Hitting the deck and trying to find a good rest for a quick shot is how I’ve rolled in the past. Seems they are just trying to put distance between themselves and the threat when I’ve bumped them have never noticed them running against the wind, etc.

I have definitely noticed that they will often circle back if they aren’t 100% sure what bumped them.

I grunt a few times, hoping to get them to stop and turn.  Works sometimes.  Doesn't other times.

They’re usually hopping or running away instantly when jumped so I try to kneel and get a shot or find a rest to get a shot if possible. I’ve had them circle back around to the same spot or close to the same spot numerous times. So I usually follow then circle back around after I lose their tracks.

Super serious. No other animal I would rather jump from it’s bed.

If they circle around, it's a circle the size of the county. Muley bucks don't stop and get curious like whitey bucks.

If there's snow or I am able to track them I will go right after them. Many times I have had them run at first them slow down. If you are able to catch up and see them before they see you then your in luck.
