Any pics of Deep/Snow Deer?
« on: January 11, 2022, 08:44:08 PM »
I am very concerned for our states Herds... this season...
The state only feeds at specific feeding stations, soo what about the majority of our deer herds??? :yike:

It is not incumbent on the State to feed wild animals during winter (hence the term "wild").  Winter losses are expected.  Harsh conditions cull the weak animals from the herd (and feeds the scavengers that are also a necessary part of the ecosystem).  Something along the lines of Survival of the Fittest theory.

The other side of that coin is that exotic conditions and diseases that have decimated animal populations in some areas, often take their toll in winter regardless of the fitness of an animal.   As a sad example, here's a pic of a spike BT deer that I found on one of my properties in Mason last weekend.  It appears to be a casualty of Deer Hair Loss Syndrome (though that is just a guess).  I have not seen a case of it in four or five years. The animal had been dead only a couple days - just starting to smell of death and no evidence of trauma other than small animal scavenging under his tail area.   Not surprising considering the recent bout of cold winter weather.  Impossible to survive without a warm coat of hair to maintain adequate body temperature.  Bummer!   :(

I’m sorry you sat and watched an animal suffer for an hour instead of doing something about it???

There were pictures of Leavenworth deer floating around social media with snow up to their heads. I wondered if the deer were just laying down.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

I don’t have any pictures, but I saw some pictures a friend took. Wenatchee only got 24” of snow. My friend lives just outside of Leavenworth and they received 36” the first night and an additional 12” the next night. Deer were in his yard trying to make it across to the orchard. Snow was up to the deer’s neck, could not see the deer’s back. He had one picture of the deer standing on its back legs trying to see were it was going.
