Savage Re-barreling questions

Gonna re-barrel one or two of my savages and was thinking of doing it myself.  Couple questions for those in the know....

1.  What barrel or action vise is best for savage?
2.  What anti seize is best for the threads?
3.  Any other suggestions for a guy doing this for the first time?

I know about the go / no go gauges and torque specs....but any tricks of the trade would be great. 

Also.....you wouldn't offend me if you say....JUST PAY A SMITH!!  I've considered it and was just feeling spunky and thought it would be a good thing to know how to do on my own.

1. I would buy a barrel nut wrench and action wrench from Northland Shooters Supply. You don't need a barrel vise for a savage.

2. I use lanolin. It seems to work great.

Guages can be difficult to get at times, but yes, Northland for tools and recoil lugs and nuts, PMC Tools for barrel vise, its so easy to do taking very little time.

I’ll agree northland has good action wrench’s a recoil lugs.  I’ve had 5 of their crition barrels and they have been great.  You don’t need a barrel vice for doing savage.  I did when I converted my rem 700 and weatherby vanguard over to barrel nut barrels.  The weatherby was a nightmare to remove 

I definitely would not pay a smith to do this.  Very simple task
If you were closer I’d lend ya my tools.

I really only use the vise to level a rifle in the vise for mounting and leveling scopes.  Northlands action wrench, you remove the handle and put it in a vise and then use the barrel nut wrench so it about covers anything you want to do.

I don't think anti seize is needed. I just use an action wrench and nut wrench on the carpet I have a barrel vise but never needed it . Tons of videos on YouTube. You can rent go/nogo guages. Not rocket science. I have used just a go guage then added piece of scotch tape to make it a no go. I have done 4 and they all shoot great. If you wanted to make a trip over the hill you could use my tools. I live in everett.

I will likely purchase my own set of tools.  I love savage rifles about as much as I love working up loads for rifles.  I have two savage rifles that currently sit in chassis and would look pretty amazing with carbon wrapped barrels.  It would also shed quite a bit of weight and make these rifles a little more tolerable to pack in the field.  My son shoots his 300 wsm like most kids shoot 22lr so I should learn how to change barrels for when he shoots his out.    


Really appreciate all the responses.  I have also been watching quite a few youtube videos and it does look pretty easy.

Yes, the bolt face is the same so all you would need is a new barrel.  Make sure you keep the same contour so it fits in your stock without modifications. 

If my sons 7mm-08 does not sell, I am going to re-barrel it to a 6.5 creedmoor.  If that happens I will have a great, low round count 7mm-08 barrel for sale in a few months.

Too easy to do for anybody with the most basic tools. Savage wrench and go/no go gauges. Use the gauges and you literally can't screw it up.

I love savage rifles about as much as I love working up loads for rifles.

Me as well.  They seem to be the "AR" of the bolt rifle world.      Once our move is over, and everything is unpacked, I'm looking to start my first re-barrel project...
