I know i have made some very sickly sounds trying to learn a new call method out hunting, to the point of laughing at myself to be interrupted by a replying tom on its way in to me! IDK but seems out west, i can say from my experience (very limited) that getting a bird in range of hearing your call, overcoming wind ect is way more important than quality of your sounds. the trick then is getting in the bubble of his interest..

Remember this.  The tom does not come to the hen in nature.  The hen comes to the tom.  That is why he puts on his display for the ladies.  Gobbling, strutting spitting and drumming.  What your trying to do is intice him getting think this is a whooo hooo hot hen or even a lost hen out of his stable.  Another point when there is a flock the tom's do not rule the flock there is a boss hen.  She is usually the loudest and usually kind of raspy.  Also when tom's are with hens they will follow the hen's while feeding.  Veey rarely will you see a tom leadong first unless it is late in the season and they are in bachelor groups.  They like watching the ladies from behind

I run a box call.  It’s my favorite and most hunts it’s all I bring and all I’ve ever needed

Couldn’t agree more with Russ.    I like to set up so the Tom can’t see my decoys till I can see him.   Often don’t even use a decoy.  If he thinks the “hen” can see him he won’t come closer most times.  He expects her to come to him

Most folks get super annoyed when hearing someone practicing with a new call.  My wife hates it! So if I’m playing with a new call I just practice while I’m driving (not the box call).  Get some funny looks at the stop lights but who cares

Reminds me of when I got my first bugle. I carried my mouth call and bugle with me everywhere and would bugle at people on the sidewalks because I was a child. Good memories  :lol4:
