338 bullets suggestions ???
« on: January 29, 2022, 09:44:31 PM »
Best 338 hunting bullet at ranges to 500-600 yards....maybe further but not likely.  Shooting moose and bear, so tough animals.

Rifle will be a 338 lapua and I would like to stay with heavies....Like 300 grain bullets.  1:9 twist out of a 26 inch barrel.  I love accubonds and have some 300 so will be testing loads with them but was curious if anyone with experience could suggest other bullets.

Thanks in advance.

If you like the acubonds you may like these.  And unlike most bullets these days you’d probably have them in a week or less

I shoot 250 gr Sierra GK in all my 338's.  My Lapua has a Custom Ron Smith gain twist barrel 22 to 11 1/2 built for the bullet. My 3 - 338 wins use the same bullet.

A lot of guys are shooting 300 grain Sierra Matchkings for long distances, they are a very accurate bullet. If your rifle isn't ported they might be too much bullet?

I shoot 270 grain ELD-Xs out of my 33 Nosler.
They leave the 24" barrel at 2940 fps.
Lights out at 739 yards, although I would have no problem shooting a bit further given the right set up in the field.

:yeah:

Looks like the majority of guys are shooting the 213’s at 3200FPS or the 260’s @ 3000.   Either would be a devastating combo on game. I’d go for the 213’s….but what do I know, I shoot the 143’s out of a 8 twist 28N @ 3550.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have considered the Hammer Hunter 285 grain and will likely give them a go.  I have had great results with the HH out of my daughters 6.5 creed and should maintain enough speed pushing the 285 to make them reliable expand well beyond my hunting ranges.

Any first hand experience with these on game?

only with the 205gr 30 cal.  Absolutely loved how it performs. Bc is spot on for me and meat damage was almost none.  Quarter size exit and inside was a mess.  Blood shot was maybe 1/2 around the exit hole.  Friend of mine is shooting those 275 sbd2’s in his edge and loves them but I haven’t seen how they preform on game yet.  He says it’s his go to hunting bullet

I may have to give them a look.  With any luck, this rifle will whack a few bears between me and my son prior to the moose hunt.  I will try and document (video and pics) the damage a different bullets do .  First up will be the hammer hunters and accubonds.  Of course they have to shoot well at the range first.  Lots of fun coming in the next few months. I love loading for new rifles.....it's not very good for the pocket book though.   :chuckle: :chuckle:
