AZ Elk
« on: January 31, 2022, 10:01:34 AM »
I don’t have Hunting Fool and was trying to find draw odds on the AZ website but couldn’t see them. Where can I find the draw odds? It looks like the unit I was thinking about doesn’t have a muzzy hunt this year. The ones offered I don’t know anything about. I have 16 points and might as well throw my name in the hat. Any info on where to look is much appreciated

What unit are you looking at, and weapon choice?  I'll plug it into GoHunt for you.

Thanks I was looking at 27. Didn’t see a muzzy hunt this year. Looks to me 2B 2C 3B 21 and 22 south have muzzleloader rut hunts. I appreciate it

I believe 27 is one of those units they flip every couple years and now it is in the early rifle category now.  Per my GoHunt with 16 points last year those five units you listed in order were .7%, .7%, 1.7%, only one tag which I believe will go random, and 100% for 22 south.  Those are just projection and at your point level you never know who will jump into the game on any given year.

Yes, the 27 muzzy hunt swaps every year with the 1/2B/2C hunt.  So on odd years Unit 27 is muzzy and 1/2B/2C is rifle, then they swap on even years.

Ok that’s good info. Have you hunted either of those? If someone has and wants to keep it in PM that’s ok. Looks like chances aren’t great with 16 points but there’s still a chance. I hunted 8 way back with high hopes (late rifle) and only saw 5 bulls. Took one on the last day.

I went on a Unit 8 hunt (early archery) one time too...it was fun, but not so great that I'd spend 16 points on it.  I haven't hunted those eastern units (1 and 27) but know people who have.  The Unit 1 hunt is supposed to have a ton of elk, but top end quality is apparently down due to too many tags issued recently.  But still sounds like a really fun hunt given all the elk around.  And I suspect top end quality will be better this year with all the rain they had in the last six months or so.  The 27 hunt has fewer tags in more rugged country, but also sounds like it can be a great hunt.  I've considered 3B too, and know people that have hunted it.  It's flat and less rugged, and near more people (Pinetop area).  If you are okay hunting near towns, that 3B muzzy tag would still be great and is easier to draw than the others.  I've considered it myself (have 23 points I think?) but I keep holding out for some other units that I may never catch up with!

Just looked at the dates - that 3B muzzy tag is early this year, and is likely before the rut really gets going.
