New McMillan finally

Well after all the hype about McMillan stocks, I finally got mine yesterday. Over $400.00 and 5 months waiting, I'm still on the fence. I put it on a Model 660 Remington 243 I aquired last year, needed to get rid of the old ugly original one, and McMillan was the only outfit I could find that makes a replacement. I went with a Original Model 7 design, as I kinda dig the snabel forend. Swirly pattern, 60%olive, 20%black, 20% light tan, 1/2'' deccelerater, stainless studs, blind magazine, with a 13 3/8'' LOP. Inlet was great, need a little washer on the front action screw, when tightened down the bolt won't close. Also need a ADL trigger guard. The finish seemed to be a little rough, lots of pits, and sanding marks. The recoil pad fit and finish are great, as is the the action and snout inlet. Now I need to get it cerakoted, bolt flute job, and a 2.5X8X32 Monarch, and she'll be ready for killin. Here are some pics. Later.

I have the 600 and love it. The factory stock is not much to look at, that is why I am building my own walnut.

The Remington 700 trigger guard will not fit, I thought the same. The action is shorter than the 700. The magazine actually goes above the trigger loop. Unless they have made a TG for that rifle that is significantly different than the factory styling, that would include a full redesign.
Since in the next two months I should have a finished production aluminum version of the 600/660 trigger guard ready to sell, I spent a lot of time looking at what is available, and there is not much.

Thats another thing I'm not too keen on Mookie. The ADL trigger guard has 2 holes, according to McMillan, who I just got off the phone with, I have to use a adl trigger guard, turn it backwards, shave a little off the front so it sits flush and just use one bolt, the rear one. He assured me it will work fine. I'll post pics when I'm done. Later

Same gun over in Idaho last year. Just can't like wood stocks, McMillan was the only company that made one. Still on fence as far as quality of work. Guys rave over em. You can see sanding marks all over mine, as well as little holes throughout. After waiting almost 6 months, and over 4 bills, I find out only one trigger guard screw is useable. The other hole goes into the magazine/follower spring area. I don't like that, but ain't much I can do about it. As far as worth it? 4 bills to go hunt bucks in Idaho for 50 lbs of meat? You get my drift.. As far as glass, I'll take Nikon over Leupolds anyday, but thats me. Just as tough, and alot clearer.IMO.

You ever gonna get up here? Having a beer/pig fest up here on the 27th of June. Bring a tent and come on up!! Later

I have had a McMillan on my Norma for about 20 years, best stock I ever owned , super comfortable to me but I just found a hair line crack in her. Called McMillan and they said it has a lifetime warrante, just have to send it back. I dont see the same style I have though, they look like lesser stocks now. I wonder if quality has gone down hill on them. Im affraid I will get a bell and carlson back

So how does your 660 shoot? My 600 .243 is plenty accurate. Would be even better with a better stock and scope. Remington did an amazing job with these. Except the whole trigger guard issue.

100 yards, 100 grain HSM BTSP. 3-9x40 Redfield scope, 3 shot groups. Shot right next to each other on the same piece of paper. The only issue is I need a 15MOA rail. I was aiming at the orange target, that is how high it shoots. Scope is bottomed out.

I know what we're both there for, but it doesn't always work out. How bout this, about a month and a half, I'll chew $400.00 worth of Copenhagen... Add a few bottles of Snake River in there? Be ready for good times on the 27th, you gonna bring Skinner with ya? He's more than welcome....

Just shot a 1 1/2'' group with it, huntable, but hardly what I like. Shot better with the factory stock. These are 100 grain federal classics, gonna try some 90 grain siroccos in her.

He got a RUM... He shot it 11 or 12 times with out any problem while we were siting it in.  I ordered an A5 with the plastic cheek piece to make it as light as possible.  He wanted a standard green.  I tried to talk him into a camo one but it was his decision and it is his gun.  It looks like it kicks... 

He told me I was too old to shoot it.  The shock might stop my old heart... LOL

Jud, That really looks nice.  I will show it to Jake to see if he will change his mind.  Crip it is going to take a long time before I get it.  I am sure he could change his mind a couple of times without it effecting his order.

Dropped it in and it might need a little bedding work. Doesn't seem to be completely even. The barrel certainly doesn't touch, but it seems to be pointing too high, plus when the recoil lug is firmly down, the rear of the action, where the screw goes, is up out of the stock. Tightening them both down is what causes the high barrel position.

Feels way different than the factory plastic. Need to get it rescoped and to the range.

You guys know of any good smiths that do good bedding work in the Portland area?

Tony,
If you own a dremel, you can do the bedding work  yourself.  Just get some Acragel from any sporting goods store (I think even Walmart carries it).  All you have to do is put the barrelled action in the stock, if it will rock back and forth due to a point not bedded right, just remove some material, until it stops rocking and the gun sits level in the stock.

Then, re bed the stock making sure you use lots of release agent on the metal.  I have used paste wax with great success.

I do a lot of bedding myself. I have talked to quite a few people who do it for a living and have done it for decades.

Devcon 10110 for bedding and Kiwi neutral shoe polish as the release agent. I have done two stocks like this in the last two months. It is a much better product than accraglass for a few reasons, and they are why I no longer use it.

If you want to do it yourself take your time and do research. Otherwise a GS will do just fine.

After some playing with, it fits just fine. Don't know if there were some burrs or built up paint, but dropping it in a few times and tightening down fixed it all. Just need to rescope and hit the range. Then maybe bedding, Ti flute & cerekote the bolt... then call it good.

I was unsure about them before, but am sold on it now. With Talley LW it balances about 1/2" in front of the recoil lug (still without scope). Put it on the bipod and it stays true. The factory tupperware would bend and flex all over the place. Could twist it so the barrel would make contact with the stock on each side. This thing doesn't bend and the barrel stays right in the center of the channel. I can pull the barrel down into the stock, but I have to pull pretty hard, compared to easily before. Also slid a dollar down the center and was too easy. Folded it in half, did it again. Folded it yet again and it still slid all the way down, though I could finally feel some resistance.

Haven't had a B&C or HS, but do see what the big deal is about these McM Edges... and I haven't even gone to the range yet. Wasn't sure about getting one, certainly hesitated, was skeptical to the day it came, but I think it actually lives up to the hype. Now the Swirley, have heard many mixed reviews of the finish and such.

Will get some pics up when it is ready to go, and hopefully some good target results.

Don't know if I'm being picky, or if it could potentially make a difference. When they paint the stock, they do the inside and all. Having it all tightened down and ready to go, I've already seen a few spots where the textured paint has been squished down and smoothed out. About the rest, that hasn't been, should I leave it alone or sand it down so everything is smooth?









And in the rear, around the screw area, should that be completely flush with the stock? It sits a little above it. Too much attention to detail or should be fixed?

I personally like the textured look.  Mine is smooth and I am actually going to get some texture on it because it get slick when it gets wet.  As for where it mounts that should be smooth.  I would recommend bedding the stock at the two mounting points and possibly putting in mounting pillars if you want the ultimate accuracy.  I plan on doing this on mine but a lot of people swear by it and some say they are not sure if it makes a difference.  If it going to be used for hunting probably will not matter but if you were going to shoot long distance may be a good idea.

I do like the textured paint, but on the inside, where the action and barrel sit, should that be smoothed out or remain as is? And the Edge does come pillar bedded so no worry there. No idea how it shoots with the stock as of yet.

Well where the two bolts attach it be smooth witch you would get by bedding the action.
