Planting pheasants and training dog out of season.
« on: February 02, 2022, 05:31:03 PM »
OK guys what are the rules?
Can I plant my own raised birds and train my dog on public ground with them?
Say a release site?

Technically you need to have a receipt from a licensed bird farm in possession. Have I ever followed the rules........negative.

Lol.
Hard to find a spot that has cover but isn't too soggy right now.

Scatter Creek was made for dog training. Mostly dry also. WDFW has the dog training requirements listed.

Scatter creek is the place to go. As previously mentioned, if you are using game birds, you need to have your purchase receipts. Also need a small game license.

Skookumchuck has plenty of dry land as well.  I was just out there running rabbits this last weekend.

If the birds are banded you don't need receipts for those that raise their own.

I saw they had part of the area fenced off for some reason.

Probably studying how older shotgun wads respond to prairie fire.

That area has been fenced off for years. Like a mandate, ignore it. My dogs do.

Form what I recall and yes, rules change so your best information will come by calling WDFW and speaking to Katie in the upland management division. She has been open and honest and provides RCWs for laws every time I have spoken with her.

On state land they do require a gamefarm receipt on private not required. All released birds must be labeled as YOUR bird!! A simple zip tie will prove it is your bird (be sure to put it on BEFORE you release the bird). Training during nesting/rearing times and on state land is not allowed (thus the reason most pay to play places are closed from March to August). The private lands that do not hold any "reproducing" birds can be used during those months.

Hope this helps, best of luck in the training. There are retriever and other training clubs around with land that can be used exactly like you desire.
