What powder is used by Hornady in 300 WM?
« on: February 10, 2022, 12:08:42 PM »
Does anyone know or have an idea of what powder Hornady uses in their 300 Win Mag load for the Precision 200 Gr ELD-X ammo?
I have a friend that uses that factory ammo and would like to duplicate the load as close as possible.
Thanks
Scott

Top secrecy info bro...
With that said ,try some Google searching,it's always a guess to what powder is in a factory ammo.
But Google
Or some guys on here might lead you there.
What's the muzzle velocity on the factory.
Then go to hodgdon website or reloading books.
Take factory ammo apart, how many grains are in a loaded round.
You need more info to unlock that kind of bank.
Then there are some powder I believe that's only available to factory in bulk of course.
Like said it's always a guess.
Even if you believe you've got it figured out. Always check your zero and all that good stuff.

Here I did some of the leg work for ya.
Hornady website says 2850 for muzzle velocity.
Here's hornady reloading data in the picture.
Since I'm a hodgdon guy I would go with h4831 if you can find it.
But without having a round to see how much powder is in one of hornady rounds, and if it is stick powder or not ,I don't own a 300 win mag .
The rest is up to you, kinda depends if you want an exact copy,or are you happy with similar muzzle velocity,or what shoots best out your rifle ,that's what most hand loader cares about.
This is just info I found on the internet, not to be used as reloading info, that's up to you to use info out of your own reloading book or what not.
Your responsibility is yours alone when it comes to reloading ammo.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were using RL26.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I would say it's probably not an stick powder.
Just cause other powder will give more accurate measures in the way the make factory ammo.

I'm pretty sure h1000,h4831 are both stick powder.

Thanks for the replies. He has some factory rounds and I suggested he pull a bullet and check the charge weight and see if the powder is extruded or spherical.
The load data chart is a great help! Thanks!

Generally, they use some kind of proprietary blended powder and not something standard or available to consumers.

Like said in my first post.
Top secret info there.
But I'm sure an accurate load, with same or better muzzle velocity can be achieved.
That's all part of the handload game though.

No problem.
Like said though ,DO NOT USE that chart for reloading.
It's just some chart pulled off of Google ,be sure to use accurate load data from a known source.
It's just a reference to try and figure out what powder they may be using.
