What are the dates for 2022 youth turkey?
« on: February 11, 2022, 07:40:19 AM »
I'm trying to plan the youth turkey hunt for this year! We will be running the contest again!

Someone told me youth turkey is going to run from Saturday to Thursday this year, but when I look at the "nearly worthless" WDFW website, I can't find any dates for 2022, they still show 2021 seasons?

This is Feb 11, 2022! It's less than two months until the youth turkey should open!

WDFW is just becoming ........  :bash:

Did some more digging and finally found a page that lists 2022 turkey seasons, it looks like youth turkey will be 1 week this year, Apr 1-7.

That makes sense. Run a YOUTH season on weekdays while kids are in school 🤦‍♂️

 :yeah:

Not all kids have the same spring break...but my kids do have this week off.  With that said....It is a move in the right direction from our lovely WDFW.  I for one would have no problem taking my kids out of school to hunt so seeing a longer youth season is awesome.

Now if they can get some more youth deer and elk hunts!!!

yep you're right. Ok well shame on them for planning youth season when I have to work  :chuckle: I'd much rather see two weekends vs the spring break dates but more days are better than less days for sure.

They printed then in the 2021-2022 upland fame and waterfowl pamphlet this last year.   The WA state NWTF was pushing for the 1 week youth season.  We did want it started on a weekend but I guess they just felt like a date time frame.  Get those kids out there.  I think this is the best thing to get kids out there hunting is turkey hunting but I am biased

I actually think it would have been nice to make it a couple days longer, 9 days to include two weekends, they were probably hesitant to expand it that much at once, but I doubt it would have much impact on the turkey population. I agree, turkey is about the best hunt for getting kids out hunting!

I actually suggested just that.  Instead of a date range just make ut through the first 2 weekend in April.  I guess that didn't take it.  I grew up in MN and deer rifle season always started on the first Saturday of November.  Easier to remeber which day of the month than a date.  You will know every single year that it starts on that Saturday.  Regular spring turkey is always the 15th so that never changes and easy to remeber I guess.

Maybe it just me,I'm not sure.
But anytime I've made a common sense suggestion to WDFW ,they almost always do the opposite.
Two weekends would be nice ,since most kids are back to in person learning.
They could make the youth season the whole 15 days till general opens ,with little impact to turkey population.
That's just my opinion though. Not really science.

It's went from 2 days to 6 days, and still complaining :chuckle:. Youth season isn't even the best season to be taking kids out unless you've got some farm yard private tied up in my opinion. At least I'm glad to see they didn't take it away like the spring bear.

Absolutely extend the youth hunt! Down here take the fall hunt back (which we should never give back what we gots) and have the youth hunt mid March through April 14th for youth.
