Looking for a new quality tent
« on: February 11, 2022, 05:46:28 PM »
So what's good in tents these days? I'm looking for a 3-season tent, with the most adverse conditions being camping on the west side of WA during September. Only needs to sleep 1-person, but have enough room for my gear. Would like an attached foyer, but not a requirement. Doesnt need to be lightweight as I will not be packing it far.

Any advice? I was previously looking at the Eureka K-2 XT a few years ago as a frame of reference.

I would check REI, I have been using their tents for truck camping and they have proven to be a good value.  You can go big or small depending on what you need.

Budget?

If you're not into high dollar stuff look at a hyke and byke Yosemite 2p.
I've had one as a back up tent for a few years and it ends up being my go to tent most trips now... it's really surprised me with it's durability and longevity...from cold and snow in Idaho to rain, snow and wind in Alaska... it's just been a really good tent for me..

No set budget, but if it's more than a guided elk hunt I'll just buy the guided elk hunt  :chuckle:

I've really liked my tarptent tents. Have used both the aeon and notch. They come in silnylon or light (but expensive) DCF.

Have had them both in nasty wind and rain. No issues.

If it's a tent your not packing....I would look a the Kodiak Canvas 10x14 with awning.  Plenty of room for a cot and all your gear.  Put a little buddy heater in it and you are set.

+1 for TarpTent, specifically the Notch and Stratospire, if you're looking for a backpacking tent.

Might want to look at the Kuiu Mountain Star, or the Hilleberg tents.

I have been using  a Cabelas West Wind 8 man tent for about ten years now. I hunt by myself, but I like the room,  :chuckle:
It has been through some serious weather and has had no problems at all. In 2019 I had sustained winds of 45 MPH and gusts to 60 MPH all night and showed no damage in the morning. I go no sleep with the wind howling, but the tent held up fanatically. It sheds snow well.

They make a 4-man and a 6-man as well. I linked the four man:

I have an old Eureka outfitter 4 man that I still use today.  It is 35 years old.  Those things are bullet proof.  Don't remember the model.  Definitely not a back packing tent.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

A second for the Kodiak canvas 10 x 14 flexbow tent. Absolutely a breeze for 1 person set up plenty of room for cot and all your gear unless you plan on having a hide a bed sofa and TV console. Handles 8+ inches of snow and severe sustained winds that blow down trees.

I have a kifaru TeePee that I do much the same with - car camp with short to no pack - it works great.

Lately I have been considering an Eskimo ice fishing tent.  The FATFISH 9416I is plenty big and no center pole is nice for a tent you can stand up in.  Just throwing it out there  :hello:

I’d go with an MSR Hubba Hubba. It’s a 2P tent but having the extra room for gear is awesome.

If you want a tarp option, you can’t beat a Kifaru Supertarp with an annex.
