Turkey ammo shortage
« on: February 16, 2022, 01:35:47 PM »
I have been looking around and there just isn't a good supply of turkey hunting ammo right now. Have y'all been finding any?
I got enough for this spring season but I am thinking about the fall season and next year as well. Thanks, 253shotgunner

Join the waitlist. I've been happy with their waterfowl loads and turkey loads. Just get conditioned to buying pre or post season and sitting on supplies.

Bimarts in Yakima have had multiple different brands on the shelf for weeks including heavy shot magnum blend. I bought .410 tss online today for the kids.

I bought some .410 TSS loads via ammoseek (online) the other day...this site is a clearinghouse/search for other vendors, and it lists updates every time there is one (like every few minutes)...I clicked on the first company that was updated 1 min 40 seconds ago and they had 2 boxes, and I bought both...but there were lots of vendors that had some in stock (the first one was the best price too...at $30 a box plus S&H and Tax). I was leary about buying ammo online but the prices were good, and with the S&H and tax it came out to what I would have paid for it in store, (if/when they come in stock) so I figured order it now, and get it before turkey season...or wait and hope the local stores get some in stock AND I am there in time to buy some before it's all gone again...

Grade

PS. Another online option is Pendleton Ammunition out of Pendleton, Oregon, and you can call and talk to them directly...they offer TSS turkey loads, for a good price, until you add in shipping!

friend purchased 3.5" pend tss last year and they would not auto.. the roll crimp made shell mushroom enough to hang in chamber.. dont think this is norm for them and they wanted to make it right for guy but i dont know how that all played out..... apex will have ammo back in stock early to mid may as well... filling vendors orders right now and NWTF convention in full swing back east

Well...I bet your friend is the reason why Pendleton has a banner on their TSS page about how they improved the rolled crimp this past fall to work in all auto-loaders! I read that and thought, "that is weird"...but now it makes sense! One reason why I like the Federal TSS loads is because of their wad/cup design and uses a roll crimp with clear wad card and a special wad...they pattern very well too!

I ended up buying two boxes of Federal 3rd Degree Heavyweight TSS in 20 gauge online. I have enough to pattern my various loads to see what choke/ammo combination works best. I can't wait for Spring Turkey :)

I finally bit the bullet and bought a 5-pack from roger's Sporting Goods for $46.99 plus tax & shipping. It's practically kills me to spend that much money on shells, but this will be an experiment this season. I have lots of standard, high base 3" magnum #6 for backup.

Plenty of ammo available online. Midway has lots of options from the cheap remington turkey loads (bad reviews) to the TSS expensive stuff. Prices for ammo across the board just aren't great and I'm afraid thats the new normal.

This is about the onlynplace I have found ammo at a decent price.  In Nashville at NWTF convention.  They have ammo here but nit that cheap.  .410 is the cheapest

Hooked on Toys in Wenatchee had quite a bit of Turkey loads in different flavors. They also had several flats of Winchester BB Goose loads, right as the season ends.

Its all relative right? I spend 100 on gas, the time and effort to go, the cost of the licenses, etc. A $10 shell is a drop in the bucket for ammo you may only shoot 1 or 2 a year.

Something to consider to avoid shortages in the future is to just load your own turkey shells.

No fancy press needed since we're just talking a handful of turkey shells per season.  Either get the drill bit crimper and shell vise from BPI or Precision, or go with the Russian manual crimper off Amazon (I have both and actually prefer the manual crimper....I just hit it with a hair dryer for a bit first to warm it, works like a charm).   As long as you have the powder scale, powder scoop, etc. it's not hard to pick up the components for shotshell reloading right now.  Just keep an eye on BPI/Precision/Macks for components.   Contact Hal over at Tungsten Super Shots website, as he deals TSS and supplies pressure tested load data with your TSS purchase.   A pound or three of #7 or #9 TSS18 goes a long way considering it's turkey shells that you aren't going to shoot a bunch of (I typically load 3/4oz or 7/8oz loads, as any more is really waste of TSS shot).  And manually loading up 10 or so shells doesn't take much effort.   Or if you would prefer to save money and load lead instead, just get one of the load manuals off BPI or Precision and can get lead from them.

Yes, Lil Gun is one of my favorite powders in the TSS loads.   And LilGun is in stock on multiple websites right now.  Almost bought some this morning, then looked at my powder stash and talked myself down from component hoarding.  :-)

Get a bag of primed hulls from BPI or Precision or Macks.  Get the specific wad for the recipe, overshot card, powder, etc. specified in the load data, and the TSS shot (or lead).   Get the roll crimp or manual crimp tool and vise.  That's really it.

You might want a tool that goes inside the shell to tamp down the powder before inserting the wad, or go look on youtube and guys just cut a wood dowel for that.   I load Rocky Mountain Brass hulls as well, so already had their manual load tools so already have the dowl.  But it's not hard.

I bought 4 boxes one day, 4 the next, then 2 the following week. I'm set for several years now. The funny thing is I may use my Hoyt Nitrum 34 to harvest both my Tom's this Spring.

Not sure where you're located, but the little gun shop off of Meridian in Edgewood had a bunch when I was in there the other day. Seemed spendy to me, but in stock if you're still looking.

The old Kesselrings on old 99 had ammo two weeks ago. My buddy and I bought a 10 box case and split it. About $8 a box . For 3 inch Ultimates.

Are they back in business? At the same old location? I really miss that shop. They had a fantastic inventory of older shotguns. The old man was a great guy.

On that targetsports ammo website.
That's mighty expensive for ammo then the shipping for a handful of ammo.

I went to Sportsmans Warehouse Federal Way, Sportco in Fife and Bass Pro Shop in Tacoma and they were all out of shotgun ammo for turkey hunting. Online is the way to go right now.
On the bright side, lots of 9mm, .223, .308 and 7.62 x 39 ammo were available this past weekend.

If you're as bad at turkey hunting as me, one box will last you years!

I picked up a couple boxes of longbeard XR at Skagit Arms last fall. Scrambled a bit last year so...

Been seeing turkey ammo at most places I have stopped at and looked.  They might just be receiving it now in some cases.  Worst case scenario pick up a box of phesant loads 1-1/4 oz #5 or #6.  They work good.
Cut em!

Tons of turkey ammo was in Nashville from Thursday-Saturday.  Going out like crazy.  Day one 12ga. was sold out within 2 hours of the show opening but they had some coming in.  Federal, Winchester and Apex to name a few.  Found out I could bring 11 lbs if I put it in my checked bag.  I didnt need any though.

Not really, Donny K. Is there and is selling everything but firearms. Someone else in there has a FFL and selling a few guns. Nothing to write home about. I think they call it Primal Arms or something like that. :dunno:

Widwayusa has a small selection. Prices are higher, but it’s available.
