I use a Remington 870 Wingmaster .410 and those Apex Turkey Ninja #9.5 TSS shells. My gun has a 25” fixed full barrel. I agree with the other members who say a .410 makes the hunt much more fun and with the TSS shells it will ethically take birds out to 35-40 yards. I’ll never go back to a 20 or 12. That being said, my 12 year old uses his 12ga semi auto with 3” #4 lead and a primos undertaker Turkey choke. It allows him a better margin of error.

Thanks, it sounds really nice. Sort of like the Winchester Model 42 of the Remington world. I have a thing for pumps, especially older ones.

I'm curious, does your 870 have a scaled down receiver to compliment the smaller .410 barrel, or is it the same size receiver as a 12 gauge?

It’s the appropriate sized receiver to match the barrel. The barrel is vent ribbed as well. It’s an extremely beautiful shotgun. I bought it from a farmer buddy of mine for $350 about 8 years ago. It didn’t have a plug so I custom made one out of 2 different diameter pieces of dowel.

Yes, a model 42 with one of those solid rib 28” barrels would be a sweet unit.

Exactly. My first Rio was taken with a Model 12 solid rib barrel gun in 16ga (with the short chamber). It's a nickel steel gun made in 1917. There's just nothing like them anymore.

That’s a beauty!

Nice, I own the same exact 12 gauge. That is designed after a Winchester 1300 shotgun. I bought a Carlsons Long Beard XR X-tra full turkey choke for mine. It has the .660 restriction and is a 50 yard turkey buster. You will enjoy that 12 guage, they aren't bad at all.
I won $200 last Spring with my Savage 320 for a "longest beard competition.

Thanks that gives me more confidence that what I bought will work for my boy needs.
I'll post up pic of the choke. I believe it .690 extra full.
And midway is completely out, like I thought they would be.

Then I think I got a choke that will give him some distance, yet allow him some versatile options for waterfowl to grouse.
He can use up to BB shot ,with 3in shells for waterfowl too with the extra full .
Most 3in shell are right around 1550 velocity. Which is the longest shell the gun can take.
I've never bought chokes ,and had to deal with all the little technical stuff. I got the right threads, size, all that jazz.
Now I have to wait till middle of March for the boy to take it out and pattern it.
This is what carlsons website says about his choke.

Not sure if you're heart-set on a choke yet but I've killed many turkeys with this one. Gets me a great pattern out past 50 yards, never have had to shoot a turkey twice.

Wow ,I may go with something like that in the future.
That's a killer deal or price for a turkey choke.👍

I bought it as a poor college student and years later haven't looked back.
