Youngest turkey hunter?
« on: February 20, 2022, 02:21:52 PM »
So my grandson says to me the other day, “I’m going to turkey camp this year.” I started laughing and said that it would be so fun to have him. He’s 7. But I Got to wondering when he would be ready. I also wondered what the any of you or your sons were when hunting started. Thanks

I started bringing kids along at 3 - 5, depending on the kid.

Just make it fun for the kid, and keep in mind his/her ability to concentrate, sit still, etc.

Make it a great hunt, not just about getting a turkey.

One thing I learned in taking my 5 kids hunting when they were small:   Just make it fun.    Animals have a way of showing up when you're just having fun with your kids.   And even if they don't, you will be making amazing memories.

You'll also have the best chance of growing some amazing hunting partners if you take them out early, and keep it fun.

I took my son when he was 8, deer hunting no gun till he was 10.
Took my grandson at 8 packing a Savage.
Last year my grand daughter came turkey hunting and deer hunting camp four days each at 7 no gun.

My grandson now 20 has never missed a week deer hunting with me.

When I taught Hunter Ed it was not un common to have eight year olds in class. Each kids a little different.

If you are taking a younger kid, I recommend trying to hunt from a blind, that way in times with no action, they can play on an I pad or something to occupy their time so they are always having fun.  Not to mention, without it, it is hard to be successful as it is really tough to keep young hunters that still.  Probably had all the kids on their first turkey hunt at age 5-6 so I think 7 is absolutely plenty old enough.  Good luck!

My son shot his 1st turkey at age 10. Still one of the biggest birds I've seen in Washington.
