Hurt deer

I’ve got 2 deer that have been hanging out in the property alot lately, usually seeing them late in the evenings just past dark, today they showed up around noon and are still currently here, bedded about 30 yards from my deck. One young doe and a little button buck. I noticed the button buck limping badly and took a closer look. Down below the tendon (I don’t know the name of it) he has a big open wound on that joint. And he won’t set his leg down, looks like this has been some time since the injury because that whole leg is very lean and has almost zero muscle all the way up it. Sucks to watch! My question is what’s the correct course of action? Let it live it’s days out and die slowly? Or call fish and game and see if they will dispatch it? This is in king county in an area you definitely couldn’t discharge a firearm. Do you suppose fish and feather would even try to do anything?

Doesn’t sound like they would do anything from that explanation of its condition. From my experience if they could yell at it and chase it and it runs off they won’t do a damn thing. Even if it just runs 50 yards and falls over. We had a doe that was hit by a car and the bone was sticking clean out of its back leg. But it was still able to jump a fence so they figured it would probably survive and declined putting it down

That sucks to hear. Sucks watching them like that. It was having a hard time just turning around in place, I’m thinking that they’ve been staying close due to it and now not sure if I can even walk off the property. It has been in about a 30 yard space for about 7hrs now. But I guess that’s life in the wild

Well it couldn’t hurt to try to call and see. I’m pretty sure it’s on each individuals discretion so you might get somebody who feels bad for it. They gave me the circle of life talk which I do understand but like you said still no reason for an animal to unnecessarily suffer if it doesn’t have to

Nature is not kind, generally. But, got to let it play out. Maggots need to eat as well.

Not many insect digesters this time of year, have seen several three legged elk and deer over the years.  One old cow produced calves every year for a long time short a hind leg and every fall the cow tags guys chased her around claiming they had shot a leg off.  I would let it play out the WDFW call would likely be frustrating.  Be careful out there

One benefit the deer has is it sounds like it’s in an area that it shouldn’t have to worry about predators which would give it a better chance of bouncing back. Most wild animals are far tougher than humans especially now days.

Deer can be pretty tough. There was a three-legged doe on my buddies property for several years who always had fawns each year.

I figured she was the first to be bred by the bucks every year since she was an easy target and couldn't run away 😁
