Kitsap County fishing
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:42:43 PM »
So my 6 year old looked at me this morning after soccer and asked when I was going to teach him how to fish.  I grew up down on the Colombia, in Astoria, But now I live in Poulsbo and have never fished up here.  Any Ideas on where I can take a kid to catch some fish?

There is a place called Buck lake on the northern portion of the county.  You can also go to the little state park just north of the Hood Canal bridge.  Set up for flounder and you should catch a few.  Also a lot of dog fish in the area. The name of the park is Salsbury state park.  I have used those crab snares off of the little dock there and did ok on red rock crab.
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me

Thank you for the advise, that park is only about 10 minutes from my house.  I will give it a try and check out buck lake.

If you go across the Hood Canal Bridge and turn right towards Poulsbo and go down to 7 sisters road and turn right.  The road looks like a driveway but winds back to a small state park called wholf property state park.  I probably have the spelling wrong on that.  Drive to the parking area and then walk to the beach.  There will be a sign by the beach telling you what is open. Go to the left along the beach until it curves out toward the Island.  Settle down on a cushion and with a small garden rake gather up a limit of Manilla clams from the gravelly area's.  It doesn't need to be a super low tide or anything.  Do have your shellfish licence and a measuring devise for the clams.  Minimum size was 1 1/2" . There are also mussles and Oysters.  Let me know when you want another idea for the area.  Lived there quite awhile and worked for the Ferry system :)

Again thank you.  I went and checked out Buck lake today.  I didn't drop a line but I found it.  I think that Me and the kid will hit it on Saterday.  I told him about the clams and he got pretty excited, you are making me a hero.  Thank you.

if you want to get your kid into fish there is always the sportman's club pond on Bainbridge as well as Teal lake on the other side of the Hood Canal bridge.  (not much help with the bridge being closed)  there are also fish at Battle Point park on the island

If you take your son clamming just make sure your in season and watch for PSP warning.  That is paralytic shellfish poisoning.  Never had any problems but tried to be aware.  The way i always have done my clams is put them in a bucket of clean saltwater and dump in some cornmeal.  The clams then get rid of the grit in their system and stuff themselves with cornmeal.  I always considered that a plus when I steamed them. :EAT:

I don't know how good it is anymore, but I used to fish Island Lake quite a bit.  Caught some nice trout off the dock.  There used to be some nice bass in there as well.  When I worked at the park, one of the other employees caught a 6 lb'er.  What about Kitsap Lake?  I fished the park dock early before the water skiers and jet skiers were out.  There's also the camp across the lake.  Camp McKean?  It's run by military MWR and is open to AD, Guard, Reserves, and retirees.  Slayed the 'bows with orange power eggs.  If you can still get on the sub base, Trident Lake holds trout.  Saw a picture in a mag of a guy that caught a monster out of there.

I use to shoot out of the Camp Mckean gun range. Lots of good people silhouette shooting over there.

There also allot of little lakes up by Gold and Green mountains. Haven Lake, Tiger Lake, Holly Lake, Collins lake, all of these are stocked. Buck Lake is by far my favorite to fish though.

Where's that at?  Is it open to anyone or is it like a training range?  I'd like to go there with my Dad whenever I get back home next.

I dont think there is a range at Camp Mckean. Maybe at Camp Wesley Harris? Not open to public but is a nice range just up the road.

You are correct, I confused the two it was Camp Wesley Harris. There was talk about the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver club getting control of the range?

Since there is a kid involved, Haven lake pink and yellow power eggs fished off the bottom. Head off the launch and on the far side 50' off on the edge of going into the big part of the lake. The triploids hang right there.
