How do you keep your mouth reed calls organized?
« on: April 25, 2022, 03:43:37 PM »
I can't call worth a darn but that doesn't stop me from buying reeds. I am staring at a stack of 9 reeds, and I know what 2 of them are. The rest I'll figure out from Amazon purchase history later tonight, but my question is: How do you store yours and how do you remember what each color combo is? Do you have some sort of fancy storage holder for them with labels or what?

Just use primos hyper plate.  Just the one and can manipulate it to make calf, cow, and bugles.  Just find the one you like.  No need to really buy all the different kinds.

I only have like 3, max. Just keep 'em in the fridge off season. I can make any call I need with them, and they're easily visually identifiable.

I have one of those primos three pack holders and just use that.  I can't remember what any of them are for but typically use the red one for everything.  The others are just backups if I lose the red one.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

I've got 100+ elk and turkey diaphragms. I've got em thrown all over the place. If I was smart, I'd buy one of the clear plastic fishing boxes and put each diaphragm in a slot like you do lures. Even of you couldn't remember each, you could write it on the top of the lid above each diaphragm or on the sides or bottom of each slot. :twocents:

I am going to get one of those clear sheets for sports cards, where you can fit about 9 cards per page, then write little notes for each one to identify each one. Every note will read:
"Sounds ridiculous, doesn't work."

If you're elk hunting you only need  grey AMP's from phelps and you're set.

:yeah: Once you find one that works use it. I use my favorite for all elk sounds and I use same one for turkey calls, rabbit distress ha ha. I think it has more to do with fit for your mouth etc. Find the one you like and buy a few of the same just for back up. They are all capable of making the right sounds just certain ones will work better for different people

Wow so are all the different ones just gimicky ways to sell more?
You can make turkey sounds with an elk call? (and theoretically vice versa?)

That's what I should do, I have the green, white and black too.  I'll probably settle on the grey or green and just carry 2-3 of those.

I use the holder like this one, way overpriced for what it is.  Phelps makes a similar one, I wouldn't buy it if I didn't already have one.

I use my elk reed for turkey calls. I’m not sure if a turkey reed would be good for elk sounds 😂. I use the same elk reed for predator calls like a rabbit distress and stuff. The elk calls are slightly different but you just need one that works for you. Selling a separate reed for cow calls, bugles , aggressive bugles etc, etc is a gimmick I think.

Not necessarily. It all depends on the cut of the latex. I attempted to make an elk call with my sharp tooth jack call, it didn’t sound close at all. However, I made an elk call with my raspy old hen call, and got some cows to mew back. Just to throw another wrench I convinced a covey of quail to come closer using my mellow momma cow call.
