My wife is shopping for a horse!
« on: March 11, 2022, 03:52:46 PM »
She’s been looking everywhere but apparently the good ones sell through word of mouth and not “classifieds”. Here’s her wants: 14-15 hands, 8-15yo, bombproof farm horse, riding around the property (50-100 acres, ours and the neighbors, flatland), giving kids rides, no gaming horses, sound. Just casting out a hope! 🙂

Got two farm horses I'd love to give you. Problem is they belong to, yes, my wife. Good luck to you. Lots of new fencing to keep you busy. You're gonna learn farrier work and how to stick needles in large creatures that already don't like you. Vets are real cheap too😆

I once had an uncle that had a saying…”They gotta catch ya’ before they can hang ya’”. He wasn’t a mean guy (never drank or smoked) but he couldn’t help but skirt the game laws. 99% of the time it was ducks or fish (salmon or steelhead). He would rather shoot a cormorant than a mallard any day. I had to pay attention when I was out with him! He was fun to be with….laughed a lot…very cheerful!

😂 No sheet! We’ve been thru a few horses over the years. They can be a lot of work for sure! The worst part is having to shoot one when it’s time…I do hate that part even with me not being a horse person. On a lighter side….did you know a horse sheets 15 times a day! When 2 are locked in a paddock due to “whatever” reasons “the boss” decides that that there is a lotta work when your the only one healthy enough to do the work! Happy wife, happy life!…as long as I get my fall hunting! 😀

I was sure prices would come down after horse folks saw hay prices.  Seems its still impossible to find a good deal.

My wife has been wanting one since age 6. I've set aside about half your budget so far. With today's prices that will get her a saddle.

Totally understand that. We’ve got a 30yo retired lesson mare that is sweet as honey. Follows me around like an old Labrador retriever….knows my hand signals and “grunt” like an old dog!

Correct me if I'm wrong...aren't horses like boats? Boats are a hole in the water you throw money into. Aren't horses like a hole in the pasture you throw money into also???   :dunno:

Then again, happy wife happy life.

😂 Yep, pretty much. I had a boat, she had a horse…life was smooth. Today, I still got a boat, she don’t got no horse….life is a bit rocky. Especially lately….I’ve been getting my boat ready for summer! 😁

When I first read the title of this thread, I figured you were asking if anyone had a second job for you to be able to afford your wife's future boat RV equine investment. Best of luck to you in finding that job horse.

At our Inn in NH we had two Belgians for hay and sleigh rides. Beautiful horses and they loved to work, getting all excited as you hooked them up.

😂 Named after Joe Diffy. He’s a grandma horse if I’ve ever seen one. I’m not a horse person but I have learned a lot the last few months since she had to put her last horse down (a difficult horse that we had for 10 years). We’ve had to put down 3 horses over the last 12 years for various health reasons. I’m hoping that what I’ve learned about horses can help her in getting a good horse. I think we did today. A Mr. Ed kinda horse today.

Wife wants NOTHING to do with horses (smart wife)

I don't want to deal with the trauma when I sell the horse when daughter goes off to college and I retire and start travelling

better get good with the muzzy because you will rely on it to put meat in your freezer. You won't have any money to spend on buying meat when it all goes to hay, supplements, hoof trimmings, teeth floating...  :yike:
