Montana e-tags

I just noticed Montana has a new phone app and the opportunity to do either printed tags or phone tags.  Who is going to use the phone tags?

I'm super tempted except I don't want to jinx myself and have my phone die or get lost during the hunt.  No different than losing the paper tag I guess.

It would be nice to not have to attach anything to the carcass, remember to take it off and reattach when you break it down and have the paper get wet and illegible.

I hate the idea of having it all invested into my phone, what if I lose it, break it or whatever...Plus want to wait a year and see if there are kinks/bugs that need to get fixed first, probably go with paper and packing tape as usual, being as you have to choose one or the other, with no go backs.  More chance with technological error than human error on my part I believe, just lost all my songs on my phone for no reason, so don't trust it.

I want to try it but I am scared ha ha.  I am technologically handicapped.2 years ago the paper was so flimsy I had a hard time cutting the date without tearing the whole tag. Last year I put them in ziplock before attaching to the animal they were really flimsy again. Do you just electronically notch your phone tag? No attachment to carcass? Sounds way easier.

Supposedly it's all on your phone.  You have to buy the licensees and tags online (can't buy through the app).  When you launch the app, it then shows everything you have.  Somehow you clickety click and your tag is notched.  State law prevents the app from storing any location data, not sure about the time you notched, but seems like it would have to at least store the day and month.

Even if you chose paper tags your license will still be available on the app.

You do need to remember to download the tags in the app if you will be out of cell range.

I would think they need some way to fix problems, especially in the first year or two.  Looks like you can download it to a new device even if you don't have the old phone (broke or stolen) and then MT will forcibly remove it from the old device so there is some level of protection.

I wish WA would do that for fishing, I hate having to pack around a filing cabinet.

Oregon switched to e-tags and licenses a few years ago and I love it.  I was going between OR and WA so frequently, and forgot my paper tags for OR a few years and had to go to the ODFW office and pay the $25 fee to get replacements and sign the affadavit.  That couldn't happen anymore when OR went to e-tags.  The only downside is you still have to write down information on a piece of paper or tape and put it on the animal.  But I like not having to carry the paper license/tags.  And it works in offline mode so you can validate the tag when remote.  I use the phone with Basemap and the Earthmate app for the InReach anyway, so always have my phone on me so I like the e-tags.

The other nice function of the e-tags is when you have a signal and filled your first spring turkey tag, can just buy it on your phone and have your second tag without having to go to a store.  You just buy any of the tags or two-rod fishing option or whatever on your phone while you have a signal.

Curious if Montana is using the same software for it, or a different version.

Sure, fold your tag, put it in the phone, close it and then tape the whole thing to the antlers.

Me too. I would love to get a card, like a debit card, that you could keep on you that shows all your current licenses and tags. Game warden stops you and they swipe it and it reads out what all you have. For your tag, etag and done
