Thanks Russ.  I have Rhino 655t.  It is awesome (at 5w) but screen is worn and too small to read for my eyes.  I didnt know that about rugged radio. $$$  Hmm.  What are these midland mxt275base car units advertising 15watt etc.??  It looks like they are good, or is lies again?  https://midlandusa.com/products/mxt275-micromobile-two-way-radio

Cool thing is the Midland has repeater channels but GMRS has repeater pairs you can license.  Pretty cheap.  15 watts you can get out a bit better line of site maybe 10 miles but a handheld will only be 5 miles.  With a repeater up on a hill top will give you 50 miles easy.  I take 2 watt repeaters on fires up on mountain tops and cover 25-40 miles easy that is in a radius from the repeater.

I have something like that in my truck, not midland. Works great when we are traveling as a group on the road and when trying to locate hunting partners coming out hands free.
