Almost a Spring Bear Down!
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:33:42 PM »
After work last friday, my girlfriend and I decided to go drive a few gated roads in the Monroe hunt area just looking for any fresh sign not planning on seeing anything.  A couple miles in we were driving at a base of a good clearcut.  I was going slow looking into the clearcut when my GF starts screaming bear!  I look in the road in front of us to see a large black bear run into the brush along the road.  I guess it walked out into the road, saw us and ran back in.  The next morning I went in solo.  I parked my truck about a mile from where we saw this bear and began walking in very slow and quiet.  I hunted in for about 3 hours and did not see a thing.  On the way back to my truck I was walking at a pretty good pace not trying to be quiet, when around a bend in the road I see a big brown spot about 500 yards up in the road.  I through my binos on it and sure enough it was a good sized blonde bear.  The road took a dip in front of me and I figured I get get to about 100 yards of this bear without being seen.  I took off my shoes and left them in the road.  Going bare foot kind of hurts but it is really quiet.  When I got to where the road came back up I was within 100 yards of this bear.  It was huge, and golden blonde a definate trophy.  I got on one knee and began waiting for it to turn broadside.  At this point it was facing away from me eating grass.  Before it could turn another bear came out of the brush.  This one was a small black one, not a new cub but probably a yearling.  I wont shoot a sow and a new cub but a sow with  a yearling is open game.  The big blonde sow began to turn and just when I thought I would have a shot a tiny cinammon cub came running out of the brush and stood next to the blonde sow.  My excitement was gone, I couldnt shoot this big blonde sow.  But now I had another problem, these bears stood between me and my truck.  I stood up and made myself known.  Immediately the big sow turned and began running right at me, I threw my gun up ready but she went into the brush about 10 yards from where she was standing, the yearling and cub followed.  I didnt kill a bear but it was a memorable hunt for sure.

Wow, great story.  Too bad it was a sow with a cub :bash:

You still need to get out and shoot that sow,

with a camera :chuckle:
