boat trailer question
« on: March 24, 2022, 11:22:24 AM »
Over the winter when I had my boat serviced I had the trailer wheel bearings replaced, ten years old.  Though I've never had a issue with the bearings it got me wondering if I should carry a spare set of bearings or a complete hub assembly.  I'd like to know what others do and incidentally I do not launch in salt water.

I have an extra set of bearings, seals and races. I pack the bearings with grease and vacuum pack them so they are sealed from the elements. They saved me once.

I usually replace the bearings every other year or so, but I launch in salt.  I keep the old ones as spares.  I would like to have an entire hub as a spare for ease of replacement on the side of the road but I am usually within 30 minutes of my house.

It kind of depends on use and how far you have to tow it. It takes me 20 min to hit the launch not driving over 40mph the whole way my boat is lite and I have more trailer than I need. My trailer get run like a rented mule.

If I was towing to potholes that would be a different story.

We fish live on and the salt around Whidbey Island and Admiralty Inlet, plus haul the boat over to Lake Roosevelt to fish about 4 times a year.  We haul an 18' Trophy with all of our gear sitting on an EZ Loader trailer.  The trailer came with oil bath hubs, and I love them.  I've changed the oil in them twice since we've owned it (12 years), and will replace the seals this year.

I've bearings and a pre-packed hub in a tote that sits on the trailer tongue. Gotta move it to hitch either boat, so in the truck bed it goes every time. Been on the roadside twice.

If your good about maintenance it shouldn't be an issue.  My old trailer I would only take a spare hub on trips of 4 hours or more.

My current trailer has oil bath. It's almost 10 years old... Change the oil every 2-3 years no issues, no worries. Only thing I carry now is a spare tire.

Spare loaded hubs are pretty darn reasonable. Like, not much more than bearings and seals. And dont take up much room!
