Sons first moose hunt…2021
« on: March 26, 2022, 06:06:27 PM »
Not bad for a first moose at 12 years old.  Finally finished the euro which turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Why the no hunting sign on the plaque?

Why the no hunting sign on the plaque?

Grandpa has a double bear life size mount that has scenery with a similar sign.  He loves his grandad so he had to have something similar.  We were going to put the date on that sign but he wanted the no hunting.....so I obliged.  Had to add the date to the upper corner.

He said after he shoots a big one (hopefully this year)....he only wants to shoot the smaller ones.  We ate some steaks off his and they were cut with a fork tender....that compared to my big moose was night and day difference.   :chuckle:  The young ones really eat nicely.

Cool Johnny.  Like father like son.

Yes, he is definitely my son.  Couldn't be prouder of him.  This hunt tested him emotionally.  In an attempt to get him a trophy, I had him pass a few medium sized moose.  One was 36-38" moose that we had well within shooting range....He wanted to drop the hammer and I told him no.  We called the moose in from over 1200 yards out so the experience was cool and I should have let him drop the hammer, but I didn't.....we still had 4 days left in the hunt.  Well with two days left, I turn him loose on any bull he wanted.  That morning we came across the one he shot.  It was a great lesson in patience and enjoying the hunt while looking for a trophy (I've never personally been a trophy hunter).  I explained to him that there are not many 12 year old hunters that have killed a moose.  Not to mention he also bagged a nice black bear on day one of the hunt.  All ended up well and he made out like a bandit.  I feel guilty for having him pass on bigger moose so I have to take him back this year.   :chuckle: :chuckle:  Hopefully this years pics will be of a masher.

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone.  He will forever be my hunting buddy.  I hope and pray we have many more memories to make together.

What a fantastic thing for a kid to get to do.  I am assuming Alaska..?

Canada

Yes, the experience and time in the field for a young hunter was pretty amazing.  I carried a wolf tag....primarily so I could have a rifle as we were in grizzly country and didn't want my son with the only rifle......but he was the hunter and I was along for the ride.  One of the most fun hunts I have been on when I wasn't the shooter.
