montana deer
« on: March 29, 2022, 12:00:54 PM »
So I'm in. I just finished putting in for Montana for the first time. i just bought 20 acres out of billings so im going to give it a try. anyone on here ever hunted unit 535 or 590 how was your success? if you were successful i would love to see some pics. base camp will be from the property. the property is in 590 and a stone throw away from 535. wondering the best time of year to go if we get drawn. we were thinking first part of November. what are your guys thoughts. any pointers or advice is much appreciated. also if  don't get drawn I'm going to try for the b tags that way my boys 15 and 13 can get a couple youth tags if I get drawn hope luck is on my side.

We usually tried to hunt Thanksgiving week for deer but if the snow comes early Nov can be good too. Be prepared for coldness, like -20 can happen. Good luck

As mentioned, be ready for cold and tons of wind.  Good luck, I hunt a bit away from there so nothing to share.

You up by Roundup? I always look at land in that area. Can’t help with the deer. But good bull elk hunting in 590.

good luck with Roundup. 7 of us hunted there 8 years ago with a guide. Lots of deer. All got one but on private land. The locals were not very friendly and leery of outsiders. Spent lots of money and the best we got were a low key thanks. Be careful of the Mormon guides in the area. Quite a few from Utah with questionable ethics.

Hunted the area last year, shot a 2 point in 590 on some state land. First buck i seen in 3 days so i filled that tag. But the public access is limited, most deer we seen were on private land in crop fields.
Did not hunt 535 but drove around in the unit a bit, didnt see any deer worth a permit hunt. Talked to a guy at the hotel who had the permit for 535, he said the good buck.numbers were way down from years before, and to many permits given out. Dod see several trucks at a few different entrance points.
