Life Jackets
« on: April 03, 2022, 09:06:02 PM »
Greetings,
I'm going to be getting back on the lower rivers for duck season in 2022.  I know flotation has come a long ways since I was running up and down the rivers in my old boat.  What's a good life jacket for shooting out of? Anyone using automatic inflatables?
Thanks,
Goshawk

Ive played with a few different kinds and tried auto inflatables this year. I think what your looking for depends a lot on where and how your hunting.

The inflatables are cool, not very restrictive and seem to go over everything. If you are hunting from a boat they may work great.  I don't hunt from the boat much and when I do it s normally on the salt in a big boat. I would wear it in transport from a to b but then take it off once anchored. Most of the time I use a smaller boat for hunting transport and hunt from the weeds near by.  This year my inflatable  went off when I exited the boat and just enough water sloshed up to it in the bottom of the boat. I won't be buying another.  :twocents:

I haven’t come across one yet that a person can reasonably shoot while wearing it. If someone knows one, please let us know!

While I have done it, with an inflatable, you need to keep in mind you are beating the crap out of the inflation tube if it is on the shoulder. Could be bad for it.
They are not any thicker than a heavy coat, and I found it acceptable for accuracy. I was using a shotgun with a stock that was a bit short for me, so that helped.

You can hunt with my buddy Ken. When you go overboard and begin the drowning process, he will enjoy his laugh, then tell you to just stand up🤨
