No luck, but had a great time

Took the boy out again this weekend. We tried a farm that I shot a turkey on 3 years ago. I misjudged the sunrise and got there a little late. They were already out of the roosts. I figure we probably spooked them walking in. Heard some gobbles early on, but seemed to be moving away from us, and I couldn't pull them back. After about 20 minutes of sitting, I hear something that sounds like snoring, so I look over, and my partner is out cold.
No luck this weekend, but we had a great time. Better luck next Saturday.

Great pictures, looks like you got yourself a pretty good partner I say.

Looks like fun. At least your hunting partner made it out of bed. Sometimes that is half the battle. Keep after it. It is amazing to me the range of flydown times. I have a pretty open area that I hunt and they fly down at right around 5:30. A heavily timbered area, it is closer to 6:30. Last year my partner and I set-up called a group in at 6:00. Shot a tom, then relocated to another area where we shocked some into gobbling. They continued to gobble in one area, not getting any closer or any further away. I tried moving out and pulling them to my partner, we tried no calling for 30 minutes, we tried aggressive calling. Same thing for everythign we did, they would gobble and be in the same spot. We decided to try to work closer and then call in case there was something in between us, and we were sure it was not another hunter. We get about 50 yards away and realize the friggin' things are still roosting at 7:30 and this was 1 mile from the first group we hunted.
If nothing else, turkey hunting teaches you to be adaptable. Oh, and that second group flew down and headed the wrong way onto private property, so no luck with them.

Looks like a hunt you both will never forget, just getting my youngest daughter into hunting my other 2 daughters showed no interest in hunting. My daughter will really like this post looks like they are about the same age. Thanks for posting

Awesome, one little thing, that little bit of camo on his nose and cheeks is not enough, you should look into a 3/4 face mask. They will pick him out for sure. Good luck!!!

Hey, that looks exactly like how I hunt ! I got my turk on opening day after an hour long nap ... then a soft cluck and purr that was cut off by his gobble from 100 yards ... about a minute later he was ready for his picture to be taken at 20 to 25 yards. Even rolled down the hill to me so I didn't have to walk up and get him.
Everyone should realize that the easiest way to call a turk is the direction he wants to go. Extremely difficult to call them back ... so if you can get around them, setup, and just give them a little soft love .... good luck ... definitely like to see the youngsters getting their birds.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
FYI; we got to the spot at 5:15am, but had to walk across a field, and I think that's when they spotted us and hightailed it.
Machias, normally we do a better job of cammoing up, but we quit hunting at 8:00 am and he had a baseball game at 9:00, I knew there wouldn't be time to clean up, so we didn't overdo it with the cammo Saturday morning. Usually that's his favorite part of turkey or archery elk hunting
Ratherhunt, he started hunting with me when he was 3. I don't think it has ever occurred to him that he might not want to hunt when he gets older. He just keeps looking forward to each "next milestone". This was his first year putting in for special draws and will be his first elk hunt where he has his own tag and carries a weapon. Watching him harvest game is waaaaaayyy better than harvesting it myself...
