Shotgun issues
« on: April 09, 2022, 12:54:36 PM »
Since turkey season is on, figured I'd have more luck here. I have two Remington shotguns with two separate issues. The first is an old model 1100 semi auto 12 guage. The gun has been awesome, but it constantly needs new o rings or it won't cycle new shells like it is supposed to. I had to replace one again this year. Is this something I can fix for good or am I destined to replace these for the rest of its life?

The next, is a m887 pump 12 guage. I took it out to go hunting and the firing assembly was in the chamber. I tried to push it back down where it belongs, but now nothing happens when I pump it. It probably isn't fitted in there correctly and hopefully isn't stuck lol. Any help in these issues use appreciated.

So, the 1100's go through the gas rings. The best you can do is keep cleaning solvents away from them. I can't help with the pump since I can't see it. I know the the mossberg pumps have little holes in the receiver that the mechanism fits into. But the are a bugger to get set, it almost takes three hands to do them.

I got this off of one of the trapshooting forums.

"Cost of Remington O-ring: $5.30 at local sporting goods store.

Cost of #22 Viton from bearing supply co:$0.75.

I have not tried a Vitron o-ring, but when time comes to replace the one on my 11-87. But for $.75, I'll give it a go. I agree with ashquack, cleaners and solvents can really shorten the lifespan of certain materials.

I also agree with ashquack, cleaners and solvents can really shorten the lifespan of "O" rings. Also, carbon buildup in the gas port housing can also damage the rings. Back in the day when I shot a lot of trap targets, I replaced the "O" rings about every 250 rounds. I just used the plumbing "O" rings that fit got them at Ace Hardware. Can't say what the issues is on the pump gun without seeing it, it sounds like alignment between the trigger group and receiver.
