MT nonresident tags
« on: April 11, 2022, 05:16:41 PM »
So was reading an article put out by Eastmans a few weeks ago and it discussed the number of  "nonresident " tags.
MT taps the NR at 10%, but that does not include the other categories like "come home to hunt" etc....
The article stated that their were over 69k NR hunters last year combined (all categories but resident).

Now i have only been to MT twice so far and always hear from residents that their are to many "out of staters" ruining the hubting in the state. Now i have not seen the high hunting pressures yet, both trips we seen very few other hunters (public and private lands) compared to Washington.

Your thoughts?
Gasman

Its the standard excuse residents use for sucking at hunting and consistently not killing anything. Its the same in every state.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

The best part about Montana resident hunters is they like their roads.

I could not imagine their complaint, my thoughts are, hunt WA, then come talk to me..... granted we did not see great deer numbers on public land last year, but massive amounts of deer hanging on private property in crop fields. I will bet we seen 1000+ deer in a 10 mile stretch of highway just outside of town in crop fields.

It’s fantastic hunting
I’ve been 3 times 3 nice bucks and a nice antelope
This year elk and deer and antelope hopefully 🤞
Last trip took 5 old guys
All had chances on nice deer
Only 1 guy held out

I drive thru MT to get to my ID areas and I would see almost nobody on 25 miles of dirt roads. I had to look up the MT regs and see if there was a season in that unit .Sure enough it was open  :chuckle:

Standard complaint of locals everywhere. It’s just a lot easier to blame something than it is to put in the work. People here in North Dakota make the same excuse/complaint, and when I’m out I literally see no one.

As a native Montanan who still hunts in that state, my experience lately has been that if anything is going to "ruin" hunting there, it will be the billionaire New Jersey governor (Gianforte) who far prefers favoring his wealthy cronies to honoring Montana's longstanding hunter heritage for residents and non-residents alike.

And of course the problem with managing elk that are over-objective (by a variety of metrics, including landowners' subjectivity) in GMUs where certain landowners won't cooperate with MT FWP and allow public access to the elk that seek refuge on those private lands. But I'm a broken record to a narrative that has been unfolding in Montana over at least the past three decades...

If there was one nonresident hunter in Montana, there would be 500 people complaining about it.  If they can't find a NR, they just find someone with a county plate from more than one county away and complain about them invading "their" spots.  Hasn't changed since I was the one complaining in the 90s.

The hotels, gas stations, restaurants, etc..... seem to enjoy having us over though.

I saw lots of people last year (my first year) from montana and lots of other states.  I saw maybe 2 people in a week in places you couldn't drive a  vehicle to.

I was invited into a long standing established camp in Montana as the only nonresident and have always been made to feel welcome. Once they found out what I pay for tags everyone roots for me to fill them and have been very helpful. Maybe a unique situation but nobody seems to mind me being there (but now I'm starting to wonder if it's just because I bring lots of smoked salmon, homemade pickles, jam and summer sausage).

Last year we were lucky enough to meet a landowner that invited us to shoot all the deer we had tags for, get as many deer off their property as possible, we took 4 deer, 2 bucks and 2 does. And seen an enormous amount of phesant too. Got the invite to come back and hunt any time, deer or phesant

If i dont draw A tag, i may just go over with a doe tag or two in my pocket and phesant hunt this year..... I'm their for.meat...

:yeah: I still have a lot of family in lincoln county-You should hear them bitch about flatheaders!!  :chuckle: As you probably know lincoln and flathead county are right next to each other and one of those flatheaders may have only driven 5 minutes to hunt or fish in lincoln county. The nerve of those guys crossing that county line to hunt ha ha. I find it entertaining since I was a former flatheader. 1 hunter you don't personally know is WAY too many for a Montanan. Hunting pressure is very subjective
