He can hunt the permit area during the dates for the permit. If there is overlap between the general season area and season dates then I guess technically he could hunt "both" but he would still be hunting within his permit parameters. The way he made it sound is they could hunt the opener and then bleed into the permit season

I was thinking the general season with landowner tag and the special permit opened on the same day and the general/landowner ended 14 days before the end of the special permit. Both in the same unit. Though, I would imagine the landowner tag is not valid anymore and he can only have one valid deer tag in this pocket and the special would trump the landowner.I think...
You're correct. Permits trump general tags. Those 400 series permits start the day after General ends. So like this year general is oct 22-nov 13. Permit is nov 14-nov 27. He can ONLY hunt the nov 14-nov special permit. He is not allowed to hunt the general season. I think that made sense anyways
Quote from: dvolmer on April 14, 2022, 12:32:46 PMWe drew our landowner deer licenses and we also drew our limited entry mule deer buck permits. Most of Montana has a 5 week general season. The area we hunt in unit 4 only has a 3 week general season (closes two week early). With the special permits we will be able to hunt 2 weeks longer like the rest of the state during the peak of the rut. The landowner licenses only allow that we can hunt on the deeded land of the ranch. But 12,000 acres should be enough for the 5 of us. It has been for the last 13 years. Wasn't until 2 years ago that we started doing the landowner option due to the mass increase of applicants. Should be a great hunt! Good Luck to all! Now the wait continues for Wyoming limited entry elk! I hate to be the bearer of bad news D but like ID, you are restricted to ONLY hunting your permit now.

So that limits all of our mule deer hunting for bucks in that unit only. The ranch we hunt of course is in that exact unit. But we are even limited further by the landowner license. We can only hunt the ranch for any and all deer hunting we do in Montana. We are heading over and hunting the forth week of the season. That is the first week of our special permit (special permit runs two weeks Nov 14-27). The general deer season in this unit closes the 13th of November. But we could hunt the entire 3 weeks of the general season and the next 2 weeks of the special permit season for mule deer bucks. We are limited in two ways. We can only hunt the ranch because of the landowner issue and we can only hunt in this unit (if we had a normal deer tag) for mule deer bucks because we drew a limited entry permit for mule deer bucks. We drew these late permits 2 years ago when it was the first time they were offered and we saw some great deer and shot some nice bucks. Here is one that my nephew got.

I guess Im glad we weren't planning on hunting the general season anyway. I read it as meaning I couldnt hunt any other unit due to the rule but it looks like you are correct, but once again it wont affect our plans. They probably after considering the new rule, trying to spread the hunting pressure out.The permit is for a 400 series unit. So that limits all of our mule deer hunting for bucks in that unit only. So, both of the groups that I hunt with struck out. 1.6 point average for one group and 1.5 point average for the other. Dang it! First time in 12 years that I didn't pull a combo license on the main draw or the re-draw. Oh well, alternates list, here I come.Anyone know how MT handles the refunds? Do they credit back our cards or send a check?Good luck to all that drew tags.
