You are deer/elk hunting and a bear charges you - what next?

Since you have one shot at the most and the bear is closing ground at 20 mph, what next?
Do you shoot him in the chest? What if waving arms and yelling does not slow him down?
Is this where the .22 side arm comes in handy? Or that black powder pistol?

I was camera hunting and had my single shot handgun.  One shot to the chest.  I hit him at about 30 feet and closing faster than you can say O in OH *censored*.  He had enough momentum to hit me and send me flying.  He pounced on my hat that he kncked off.  As I was rolling down the hill, I was grabbing another round When I stopped I came up and crossed his shoulders and dropped him in a heap. 

Black, take the shot then start swinging.     or pull the .45 blackpowder army out and put 6 more into him.

I've been charged (while bear hunting)...I shot her at about 20 yards or less with my rifle, right in the chest.

I would do the same if I was archery hunting. I carry a .45 for just such a reason.

Lets just say you better be about business and a fairly cool customer when they charge at full bore from about 35 yards.  You really don't need two shots.  Its about THE FASTEST moment in ones life.  Make it count!

Id shoot first with the ML in the upper chest or neck. Either that or in the head. Only 2 shots will stop that bear in its tracks. You either sever the spinal cord at the neck or take out the brain. Either one is going to take a weapon that has some energy. For a handgun, imo, 40 cal is the least Id go with.

Some will tell you a 9mm is enough, some will say a 7th grader with a baseball, it's all what makes you feel better. If I had only a 9mm id definatly not shoot for a between the eyes shot. You might kill the hummingbird or spotted owl in the tree form your richochet off his super thick, high angled skull. Lol

Now that the regs are changed, Id carry a 40 cal minimum. And like Bone said, its the first shot that counts. Id wait till its about 10 to 20 feet away. And then unleash my hard cast .357 into his skull. The next 4 would go DA mode center mass. If I needed more, Id cry. Lol

9MM is not enough, I watched my dad unload a 9mm on a bear at 12 yards, bear was swatting at the bullets like bees lol pulled several out of the bear that were barely under the skin, took 3 more in the chest from my .300 win mag to put him down.

this happened to me..while just starting to hike into an area I had seen a large buck.I wasn't 10 yrds off the road,heading straight up.I seen a dark big object coming at me,I raised my 270, scope covers closed,and by raised I mean not to my shoulder from the hip,at this time I knew it was a bear,and fired right in its face at a distance of inches off my barrel.the bear went over backwards,and I reloaded as I got myself back on the road where I could see better.Now this all took place in a couple of seconds.the bear ran straight back up the drainage.after about a minute of running this back through my head,the adrenalin kicked in and I was shaken.I walked back to my truck and went and found my bud who was a mile or so away.told him what happend and ran home and got my 44 and we went looking for the bear.we found pieces of what looked like tongue,and a decent blood trail.we tracked the bear off champion property and tresspassed onto Hancock property.the tracks of that bear were just alittle over 6inches front pad.the rain was pouring down and we went about a mile and a half,down through some of the nastiest crap Ive been in and all sign disappeared.we crisscrossed and searched hard and long.we never found the bear.to this day I wonder what the bear had on his mind,I run them off of me at feet before with a yell and waving my arms..

As for the bear I would probably scream like a girl and fire whatever shot I could get off.  Then put something in its mouth other than my face.  If I could I would pull my revolver if not maybe my knife and go at him prison yard style.

Maybe affected, but a 9 wont stop one. Not enough energy to penetrate were it needs to. Thats the whole reason the cops and feds dont use it. It dosent stop people, how can it stop a 400 pound bear that dosent know its supposed to die when shot.

Even the military is looking at retiring the M9 for that reason. They have done numerous studies on cases were in tactical situations at 30 or less feet even a double tap from the 9 dosent stop the oponent. In fact, in most cases the reciever of said double tap still had 15 seconds on avarage to return fire.

This is factual info from the military. Now try to penetrate thru all that muscle, fat and bone. Bears are way tougher than humans. Not saying a 9 is a bad defense gun. I carry a Glock 26 sometimes. But in the woods Ill take 5 shots from my 357 any day over the 17 coming out of my extended clip Glock...

Id love to trade it for a G27 40sw though, thats a tough round right there. Made because the 10mm was too much for females in the field to handle. But still awesome stopping power.

I think too many of you guys have been listening to campfire stories too long.  How many of us have put countless hours in the woods, how few of bears we have seen, yet you feel the need to discuss all the ins and outs of how to be prepared for that exact situation.  I believe in being prepared but black bear maulings are VERY rare, much higher chance of getting in a driving accident to and from the field.

Granted, this is coming from a guy who hunted browns spot and stalk in Alaska last year with his bow (unsuccessfully).  A .22 will kill a 1800# cow every time if it is put in the right spot.  In the woods, if in trouble, that 9mm will do the most good by the noise it makes.  I personally don't pack a cannon or feel the need to.

The beauty of archery hunting....I only hunt where I don't see other people.  I'm guessing that the places I hunt, should I get in trouble, shooting rounds in the air would be pointless.  I feel more confident in my wife or buddy knowing where I am, being prepared, and most importantly keeping a cool head. 

If you want to carry, fine.  If you want to talk about it, cool.  The point I was trying to make was that  there really is very low risk of being faced with that situation and it isn't something that you should be "afraid" of when in the woods.

There have been LOTS of folks that would agree with yous guys over the years.Hence my name....the folks gave me two names wrapped up in one.One for each of us   is it Pat or Rick===Pat/Rick. I'm not calling BS...

There isn't enough information in his post. Double stack high cap pistol? 115gn Round nose bullets? Single stack? In Bullseye competion I shoot 5 45acp rounds in less than 10 seconds at 25yds all in the black of a 25yd target then the target turns away. I've done the same in less than 7 seconds. IDPA shooters do this at 12yds for 5 rounds in less than 3.2 seconds with .40 and 9mm all the time.

So, Lets call it a bit of high tension where a guy dumps 10 rounds, one round per .6sec.  OK, That's some rapid fire, but really, anyone can do that. And anyone not trained or practicing may not hit target every one of those shots. (I'll call a little BS on the swatting at the rounds... ) But, once the hand gun is empty, and the communication for someone else standing there with rifle, is given for them to shoot that BAR or whatever to dump that Bear in it's tracks, I'll leave that it's possible.

Unlikely, but possible.

Any of my hunting partners would have opened up with the rifle as I was shooting the pistol if the Bear was advancing. I do not believe that they would, if I was drilling the Bear full of holes with my 44mag at that distance and the Bear was not advancing. They'd wait until I gave the go-ahead.

Bone has taken a Bear with pistol. I'm sure there are archers or other pistol hunters here that have also. I wish I had taken my above average Bear with pistol. As it was, 75' with 30-06 did not drop him in his tracks. If not for the windfall between us, as he ran right toward me, he really could have hurt me. Luckily he turned away. I was pretty much alone in the woods. My partner knew not where I was.

easy guys.sounds to me like a whole lotta missing.Ive seen cops empty their weapon at 10 feet and miss the prick..the 9mm isnt the weapon of anyones choice for bears..I dont care what a person is packing if ya fold under pressure you lose.
