Blue Mountian VC Bears...

So I think I know why after 2 trips to the Blues, I have yet to see any bear tracks, scat, fresh scrapings, hair or other evidence that would lead me to believe that bears are any more populated in the Lick Creek unit than Sasquatch.

There is really only one possible answer. 


I am dealing with a unique sub species of Black Bear.  Ursus americanus Viet Congus.  They have been trained by the Viet Cong and operate chiefly out of tunnels enabling them to fade back into the forest leaving no evidence behind them that they even exist.

Has anyone ever faced this particular sub species?  Any suggestions?  I left behind 3 game cameras, tried the high ground near the snowline, the mid-level forests, and the lowland stream valleys.

Actually I believe the bears down there fall into two different catagories, one catagory is the shape shifters.  Have you seen any squirrels or chipmunks?  Most likely those have been bears that have just shape shifted.  The other bears down in that area can also pass into and out of different deminsions.  Well at least that is what the elk do down there do, figured the bears might have the same capabilities!!

Never hunted there, but I would assume...

1. check south facing slopes

2. early morning, evening is best...

3. Have you tried calling into thick gullies?

Watch out for pungi stick traps...those cong bears are tricky for sure. Good luck

I have been focusing on hilltops and southern slopes, Spending most of my time out between 8 am and sundown.  I have been playing with calls, but don't really know what I am doing.  I have been doing some basic wounded rabbit calls in 10-20 second sound bites.  Followed by some mouse squeaks.  Any advice on how to call them in?

Ever since I realized these are VC bears, I have been watching for pungi sticks.  The only bright side would be that if I fell into one, I could at least say I saw some bear sign as I understand they smear bear crap all over the sticks. 

I am liking the trans-dimentional concept.  It is very possible in the pursuit of Elk, the regional bears have learned the secret way of the Elk and are now leveraging it for their own evil.

I have been lucky enough to call in 15 bears now.  I call with a loud coarse call, I call non-stop for about an hour, might have short pauses so I don't black out from lack of O2,    I put a watch out in front of me (someone on here had a great idea of attaching thier watch to their shooting sticks) so I can see how long I've been calling for.  Put some real anguish into your calling.    leave the mouse squeeker at home if your after bears.

Great info.  I had no idea that calling for an hour was a typical approach.  I'll give that a try.

where are you hunting at up there i used to live in walla walla and hunted around there and dayton always saw bears
but its been a few years since ive hunted there.

My Dad has the Lick Creek tag and we took a trip up last Saturday.  We saw two bears, a decent black and a good chocolate.  We got to 94 yards on the black and decided to pass.  The chocolate on the other hand we could not close the deal.  Had fun and saw a ton of sign.  They are digging onions like crazy and the gray diggers are on the move.  The next two weeks should be nuts!

where does one find wild onions?  I have been looking but not finding.

Get up high and get almost to the rimrock lines on any of the south facing slopes.  They are already starting to bloom and this is literally the first year that i have been out and smelt onions in the air in a long time.  it seems to be an unreal year for onions
