This is a pretty good comparison of 357 and 44 mag performance in both wheel guns and lever guns.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I have my 45lc guarding the perimeter. But honestly, my favorite to carry, and the only one I'd grab if I had to wander this earth to protect and survive would be my single six 22mag. Kills everything it shoots, light, and a pill bottle of ammo goes a long way. Two leggeds are the only thing that worries me and it will handle them with ease.

Three Fifty Seven magnum revolver all the way. Anything from 110gr .38 Special wadcutters to Buffalo Bore 180gr hard cast bear loads. I've got them all, .44 mag, .41 mag, .45 ACP & Long Colt, vintage .44 Special S&W, but the .357 is my favorite by a mile. I keep a S&W Model 65 with 125gr jacketed hollowpoints by my bedside.

I have a .44 magnum 329PD and I love the gun. I have it as my backup when archery hunting and sometimes as a CC.

At first the kick was quite sharp when I started shooting it since it is so lightweight, Then I changed out the grips to the rubber grips that are supplied with the gun and it is like a completely different gun. Not that I am super recoil shy but now the gun has serious kick still and .44 mag stopping power but I can go to the range and have a 40 round shooting session without any issues. Wood grips more than 10 rounds and I was over shooting it.

Seen a lotta guys carrying these in Montana.   I don't know if its better than spray but having both would make me feel better.   Surprising light.   Tho I think the .357 version weighs half as much.

I love my S&W 627 Performance Center w/5" barrel.  8 shot 357 Mag revolver.  Perfectly fine for lower 48 mountain carry handgun.  If I'm in Alaska I'd always be packing a much more powerful rifle anyway so didn't want to buy a heavier handgun for that purpose.

Since the OP is from around here I assume this is for use in WA in which case .357 should do anything you need.

From 38 special with 105 grain cast over 2 grains of Bullseye, to .357 magnum with 180 grain cast over 15 grains of Lil' Gun.

My grab and go woods carry is a 2.5" Ruger Redhawk.  If it needs to be hunting legal then a 4 or 5" L-frame.

10mm.  Only because then I can use the same ammo in the revolver and the automatic.  And assuming that it's just in WA.

Honestly a solidly loaded 45 colt will be excellent and not as earsplitting as a .454, .357mag, or .44mag IMO.

However I think my favorite is the .480 Ruger.

Buffalo bore is my favorite ammunition maker by far and they have a great middle ground .45 colt load, 325 grains at like 1,000 fps roughly if I remember. Would do the trick for anything. And they have hotter loads for the .45 colt that are equal or better than a .44 mag.

Behind a stout .45 colt I’d say the above cartridges all are excellent.

357 mag : It’s an excellent round that has proven itself capable of defense against all but the most extreme animals. With a Buffalo bore or Grizzly load I wouldn’t feel undergunned unless I was In Africa. And then only maybe.

.44 mag: The Legendary cartridge that has taken every species of game animal on earth. More recoil than the .357 but not crazy. A good load and your set period.

.454 Casull: *censored*ING BOOM and it’s dead. Significant recoil. Be warned.

.480 Ruger: hear me out, it’s more recoil than a 44 mag but less than. .454. It is an excellent hunting and wildlife defense cartridge. The large bullet diameter doesn’t negotiate with Terrorists, or anything else. IMO it’s an excellent and reasonably shootable round.
