Smith & Wesson firing pin replacement
« on: April 22, 2022, 01:55:21 PM »
Not sure if I have enough information to actually be asking for help at this point, but worth a shot. A friend has inherited a Smith and Wesson 357 magnum and she asked if I could install a new firing pin. I did not get the model #, but it looks like the classic nickel plated black handled revolver. According to her, a family member removed but did not replace it

I've tinkered with shotguns, but admittedly, I'm not a pistol guy. But, after looking at the gun I believe the pin is there. Not sure though. The hammer face is flat and I did not notice a notch or hole for a set pin to accommodate and attach a firing pin. Where the hammer makes contact with the gun after trigger pull, however,  there is what appears to be a firing pin.

I realize a picture''s worth 1,000 words and a model # would help, but thought I'd throw it out here to see.

Also, if anyone's in the market this gum, and a what appears a pristine 44 magnum,  are going to be avaialable for sale soon.

It sounds like it is a later model S&W after they moved the firing pin from the hammer to the frame. One way to see if it is there is to make sure it is empty, cock the hammer, while holding the hammer pull the trigger. hold the trigger down as you ease the hammer all the way down, look between the frame and the cylinder and see if the firing pin protrudes.
