Go drive the new Frontier, Ranger, Canyon, etc ….

Before I bought my Frontier, I drove all the mid sized trucked.  By far the Taco was the worst of the bunch.
And at close to $10 k more when comparably configured, it was not even on my short list.

And used, forget it, most overrated vehicle made. I am not saying they are bad trucks, just that everyone has caught and passed them, but Tacos are still I’ll way over priced.

One of my good buddies bought a new Ranger.  It's less than a yr old and he's had it in the shop 3 or 4 times for various problems.  I begged him to listen and not buy one.  He said he was saving $ over the Tacoma.  I bet a Tacoma wouldn't be in the shop that much.  My dad has a 2020 Tacoma loves it, no issues yet.  Last Tacoma I had was a 2010, great truck, sold it with 120k in 2014 for a Tundra.  Didn't do a thing to it besides change the oil, rotate tires, and change air filters.

Bought my bride a new 2018 Offroad which she loves. I'm not much of a fan due to the garbage seats, poor visibility out the front, dog of a engine and a pain to get into (minimal headroom and I'm 5'8"). Overall I pulled the trigger over a Colorado because hands down there is a goofy Cult willing to pay stupid $$$ for these used. Hard pass if it was my personal daily driver.

The Nissan Frontier looks interesting. 310 hp, 281 lbs-ft torque. Tow weight over 6000lbs. One potential problem I see with the Frontier as well as the Ranger is that they are in the first year of a redesign. I always make it a rule to never buy the first couple years after a redesign, let the manufacturer work the bugs out.

I see that the Colorado is in its final year before a new body style is introduced for 23. I love my 2010 Colorado(1st gen)

Last Tacoma I drove was my brothers 08. Terrible blind spots. I didnt care for it

My 2016 Colorado has constant check engine lights on at 80k
I've replave the purge valve, gonna try the hose and gas cap next.  Code is for a small vapor leak, and can be many things. It's annoying as heck, but not a big deal
its got great power, gets great mpg, very comfy, and 4x4 works great.

Downers is I can't chain the front, emissions issues, but I think its a pretty solid little truck.

I think if I had to do it again I'd go full size with canopy

My 14 Tacoma was pretty worthless in the winter unless I had at least 3-4 sand tubes in the bed over the rear axle.  Most pickups are pretty sucky in the winter, with regard to traction, if they don't have some weight in the bed.  Diesel pickups are ultimate worthless POS in the winter if you don't have some weight in the bed and with those things the more weight the better.

With 3-4 sand tubes over the rear axle my Tacoma, in the winter months when it was slick out, was a completely different vehicle and so much better.  The downside was the rear springs were so weak, with those sand tubes, the suspension in the rear was nearly bottomed out and would hit the bumpstops going over every little.  Maybe the newer ones don't have that problem.

For the price you'd pay for a newer Tacoma you could buy multiple used trucks in the same weight class and tons of fuel and maintenance costs. I got a 06 F150 for under 6 grand. Everyone knows how to work on them and it's the same size as those new tacos just 15-17mph instead of 16-19. Heck you can get Dakotas and rangers for under $5k. Knowing the type of people who buy new cars you probably won't listen. Have fun with payments.

You know the OP?

The best woods rig I ever owned was a crew 1st gen taco off road, 3.4 with a manual. Canopy and that little rig was perfect. I Bought used for 7,500 with 98,000, everyone thought i was crazy at the time, but I always wanted one. 140,000 basically trouble free miles later and I sold that little truck for 7,500. Show me a dakota that will do that and you have my attention.  I can appreciate going cheap on straight woods beaters. But if also crossing into the daily or at least multi use world, everyone has different  needs. I sold the 1st gen for down payment, on a second gen 4door. Payments did suck, but trouble free mileage, enjoyable driving, and insane resale on a higher mileage vehicle that still ran well did not.

You definitely don’t know me. I have never bought a new truck in my life. I have didn’t years waiting for the right rig and right deal and bought used. I wouldn’t be asking for info on here if I was one of those people that had tons of money and just marched into a dealership and bought a rig on a whim.

I need a reliable rig that will last for the invest I’m going to make and I’m trying to get real world feedback and thoughts from guys that understand things that I don’t.

I am 6’1 and a big dude. That being said I run around in a Jeep Wrangler for all my local stuff and have no problems with the space in the cab.

This is a long range reliable rig with warranty. I may use as a street run around for one of my business as well.
