king crab legs
« on: May 09, 2022, 12:32:55 PM »
Is there another source other than Costco to buy King crab legs?  My mother loves them and I thought I would try to bunch her some. I have a friend that lives in Alaska that I might reach out to and see if buying and shipping them from there is a better option.

Are they available this year?  The guys I know that fish for them said they're all doing tanner crab since king got shutdown. For kings, have to get the ones from Norway. Just what I was told.

I don't even know if they are available.  Just know my mother loves them so I thought to surprise her with some if I can find them.

The US fleet got shut down for Red King crab this year, but they put up a decent Golden (brown) King crab pack.  Tanner and bairdai got cut back 85%.

If you buy king crab this year, please buy the American Golden King.  All Red King on the market this year is Russian.  Since the US shut down it's fleet, the Russians increased their quota (effectively fishing the same crab biomass) and are dumping red crab on our markets.  Russia's moves are pretty devastating on our fleet, and the resource.

Thank you-

About 3 weeks ago BnE meats in desmoines had king crab legs for $89 a pound!! At that price I’ll never eat king crab again and I hope they rot before the sell! Sorry skillet but if Russia sells them for $20 a pound, sold.

Whatever works for you. It's kinda like buying elk jerky, as long as it's cheap enough.

Dang it, when saw king crab and skillets name my wallet was about to get lighter  :chuckle:, but i am safe for now  :bash:
When i was a kid we lived on Adak for a few years, some of the fleets would dock there and you could buy whole king crabs for $5.00 ea, some people did not know how to cook them so they would do it in the dishwasher  :o
Housing had to send out a letter telling people to not do that  :chuckle:

Plenty of dungies on the bottom of the sound in a couple months, all you have to do is go get them.  OK, maybe not plenty, but enough.

:chuckle: All good.  Even though the red crab aren't USA product, they're still priced in the stratosphere.

Get to know someone that works at the airlines.
We had a guy buy a crate of lobster off the docks in Boston in the morning, put it on a flight in the cargo hold, and we pulled them off in Seattle in the afternoon.

funny you say that, we have some friends that have a friend that work at the airport. He gets some awesome king crab, but I think it’s the cost of doing business.

Thank you-

I appreciate you keeping us educated on this. I know there is issues going on in the back of my head, but don't have the capacity to track everything to know when issues like this arise. I wont be supporting Russian overfishing and wouldn't have known they did this until now.

Thank you
