What did this?
« on: May 21, 2022, 08:41:07 AM »
Hi everyone. I came across this tree yesterday with about 80% of it's truck missing about 12 feet above the ground. Just wondering what may have done it. Woodpecker,  porcupine, bigfoot?

Im thinking a joint effort there as Ive not seen woodpecker varieties be that industrious.  On the low end it looks like chew marks of a porkie.

Porcupines don't eat wood, only the bark and inner bark of the tree.

WP Tree rotted which is good bugging. Porky only girds and eats the bark. Never cuts into a tree like a beave.

They will too eat wood.  Used to have one that would eat on our barn, seen it several times.

It was made by an imperial stormtrooper speeder bike's gun.  Those stormtroopers make a mess with their bad shooting skills.  :chuckle:

I spent a summer in a remote USFS fire station. We lived in an old CCC barracks that was elevated about 3-4 feet above ground level and open at the bottom. A porcupine started gnawing under where the latrine was at night to get at the salt. Took about a week of nightly visits and chases to shoot it. It was smart.......would chew away until he heard the noise of guys waking up inside, then he would hightail it ahead of the posse. On his final night, I slept outside and when the ruckus started, I spotted him hauling arse to and under an old shed.
