Shed HUNTING by HELICOPTER

Crazy to think, but when I was in college in Ellensburg 1993 I was one of only a few shed hunters.  A couple years in a row I was the first driving up Joe Watt  Canyon, actually the gate wasnt locked, first tracks in and you would find 1 5pt maybe a 6pt in every 15 miles hiking. Met one guy who lived up Manashtash (local rancher) and he said dang didnt think i would see anyone up here shed hunting. "you should go to the blues to get sheds every 5 miles".  I shed hunted for a decade after that but once the branch bull over the counter tags were gone, and the spike general hunt started and the branch was a draw, right around that time, every year Wa st bulls started multiplying and before you knew it our feeding stations were loaded with 6pts bulls and eventually Wa st started producing a few 400 class bulls. I quit shed hunting a long time ago once it became something outside of just enjoying the hunt and dollar value came into play.  But I will say, I came across this video today on utube and............................

One Fall hunting above timberline in northern BC I sat on a ridge and could see half a dozen or more moose sheds on a wide bench of flat tundra below me, sort of an aerial view.  Was surprised that the moose had gone up to timberline to shed their antlers. 

Interesting video but wish they had shown antlers from the air more rather than showing picking them up on the ground after spotting them from the air.  Ghastly sound track so I kept the sound off during most of it.

Hmm, tried not to comment, but am I the only one who thinks this is a bit over the top?  And why are all the antlers bone white? You’d think if you had so much money to spend on using a helicopter to pick up antlers, you’d at least pick up brown ones!  This is prob the most lazy, arrogant thing I’ve ever seen.

lazy and arrogant? Lazy maybe. It’s a cool way of doing it if you have a helicopter. I think the browns would be hard to spot from the air.

I find absolutely nothing writing with that, it’s private land just some guys maximizing their resources which Driven probably paid for the helicopter.

I wouldn’t care if they did it on public land as long as they weren’t breaking any laws, or harassing deer and elk while doing it.

But you would never catch me riding in a Robinson helicopter, the rotor is belt driven off the engine, same principle as a belt driven motorcycle.🤯

I don’t believe we should casting stones at fellow sportsman, division is what the tree huggers love out of us.

I wouldn’t care if they did it on public land as long as they weren’t breaking any laws, or harassing deer and elk while doing it.

But you would never catch me riding in a Robinson helicopter, the rotor is belt driven off the engine, same principle as a belt driven motorcycle.🤯

They are pretty much the industry standard for training and entry level. Been around for many moons.
Lots of things are belt driven that you probably use and don’t even think about.
If you have the resources, I guess. Same with hog hunting by heli, or anything else. Looks fun to me!

Maybe arrogant was a strong word for it, I just saw it like, hey look at me looking for sheds in my helicopter.  I’m not looking to ban it, just think it’s a bit much. I mean, who does that besides the WDFW.

It's like any other advantage looking for anything. If it is legal, and they are willing to put out the cash to make it happen, good on them, I guess.
209's or scopes (you KNOW it is coming!) for muzzys, 'live' trail camera's, electric bicycles, horses, drones, compound bows, sights, peep or other, on bows. How about guided hunts? Guided or charter fishing trips?
They are ALL some form of an 'advantage' over some person going it all on their own.

For civilian helicopters, they have a very high crash rate. If I were going to cheap out n a helicopter, it'd be a Sweitzer. I'd never ride in a Robinson 22 or 44. For commercial use, they should be running Bells or Euro Squirrels or twin squirrels.

As far as hunting sheds by air, it seems an unfair advantage over the rest of us. Yes, it's a selfish comment.

I think they said at the beginning that no one had shed hunted the property in a few years or something along those lines.  Probably why they were finding so many whites.

Kinda different. Nice change from the same old brown town instaglam hush and TU videos. Pretty upfront about it being private. I wouldnt expect those types of results on most public, some areas sure, but i imagine overall pretty few and far between. Not to mention the legality, changes from nf, state, private but open, blm etc. About 10 years ago I spent a few seasons hunting landlocked public in eastern oregon. The story went their was beef between competing landowners and one landowner sold easement  to the state for hunting access. It was not year around, but started in August. Half a day in there and picked up over a hundred pounds of white. The next couple seasons were similar and I flew them out in a helo after killing my bulls. The helo ride was probably only 15 min to the truck but I remember seeing several sheds on private land on the trip out.  Always wanted to fly in mid April and see how good it was in there before the landowner who reportedly shed hunted alot picked the public over.
