Why not? I love the blacktail rut. I see some great bucks during elk season. It would be nice to actually have a tag for one.

I would say 2/3 or more of the state agrees with you.

If I can manage to pull a quality mule deer tag soon I plan on applying for the “easier” blacktail quality tags in the near future…. But with 20 points and 2-6% odds it could take a while.

The first two weeks is the best time there is to hunt blacktails. It's about the only time you'll ever see mature bucks moving in the middle of the day. I didn't apply this year because I have a muzzleloader tag but with a rifle tag I sure would. Especially with the price of gas this year, it would be nice to hunt close to home.

The only time I'd consider one of those tags is if I was hunting one specific buck

I think they are just a way to get folks to burn points...give me an early August rifle tag with no elk hunters & grouse hunters and then we can see some quality

Sure you might stumble into a good one but that last few days in October is pretty dang good, along with the late general and late archery...all in the same units

Just my thoughts  :hello:

I’m in for Quality buck, Buck, moose and sheep with 15 points for each. Not very hopeful but you never know.

I don't think a person using up their points is a concern of the WDFW. They're just additional opportunities that they didn't use to offer. I think they're great permits to draw. Definitely not high success like some of the mule deer hunts, and access in some can be difficult unless you have a timber company access permit.

That's actually one reason I applied for blacktail quality permits last year- I had a Weyerhaeuser permit that cost over $300, and I thought an additional two weeks of hunting would help justify the cost, in my mind anyway. But, like I said, I didn't draw, and ended up shooting a decent 2x3 buck on October 29. I suppose if I would've had the quality permit, I likely would have passed up that buck, and who knows, probably ended the season with no buck at all. 🙂

This year I'm in for a muzzleloader mule deer permit in a group application with ten points. Maybe we'll get lucky but I'm sure not counting on it.

This might be a really dumb question given the odds, but what happens if someone draws two contradictory special hunts? Like say Quality and Bull Elk? Are you able to choose one and give back the other and get your points back?

Given my limited points this is like worrying about an asteroid stuffed with rabid dinosaurs hitting me. Some of you gents with a lot of points could potentially have it happen though--the drawing both, not the asteroid full of rabid dinosaurs.

You can now turn permits back in for no reason at all and have your points restored. I think last year was the first year for that option. But if you have two special elk permits with different seasons, you might just keep both so if you aren't successful in the first one you can hunt the second one. Unless you think your odds of success is 100% in one of them.

If your wife was told no then she must have been talking to someone who didn't know about their new policy of allowing special permits to be returned at least two weeks before the season opens and having your points restored. It's on page 16 in the 2022 Big Game Regulations.

The new return permit policy is the only reason I put in for buck and quality 16/20. Been holding on to buck for 10 years without applying.

I’m trying to let my kid ride my 20 Buck Deer points, but we still don’t have very good odds.

Yes, the dumb turn back rule will make draw odds even longer!  Using the same strategy since we can but I don’t like it.
