Been said before but I think making people choose between OIL’s and deer/elk would help a bit, but also having people pay for the OIL tags in order to apply would also help with draw odds.  I could see several thousand less applicants for OIL’s if they did this.  The deer/elk draws are only getting worse, lots of ideas out there but in the end, going to an Idaho system of no points would be best. I think all states with the points system will have to eventually come up w something different. Wyoming is already getting out there so far that new hunters will just not apply, or shouldn’t. Max for Wyoming goes up every couple years or so from what I see. It was 13 when I drew in 18’, I think it’s 14 now?  If WDFW just stopped the point system and let people draw out, that would be a good start.

I like having states with different systems.  I actually prefer a system like Arizona where 1/2 the tags are preference and 1/2 random.  Everyone has a chance but you get rewarded for putting in year after year.  I love Idaho’s system but don’t know if I would want every state that way.  There certainly is no perfect answer.  I am just thankful I have the funds to apply in every state I want, but feel bad for those that love to hunt and can’t.

Keep in mid the DFW has no interest in making odds better. Lowering numbers in the pool goes against the bottom line.

yeah, it is too bad it’s getting to be a costly endeavor! Heck, just applying for everything here as a resident for one family member is very expensive!

i know what you are saying, but being a witness before and talking with the group and the person who does the draw, they are concerned about odds getting worse. I pass along ideas when they come up, I think a few years ago I asked here and had a few ideas passed on.  Getting things changed is another issue, that’s a tough process. But some things have been changed, and could be from this site, they know huntwa very well! They watch especially this time of year!

Look at the cash cow the department created. 60,000 people paying for and building points, very little drop out… continuous revenue.

At this point, improving odds would require people to pay a lot more in permit application fees to maintain the same stream of revenue which would be a tough sell.

I’d drop all my points (15 in oils, 16+ in buck and quality deer) for a no point system and applying for only 1 oil or deer or elk. Awesome odds for drawing the hunt people would want…. But no one would say yes because of all the points they have already accrued.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

The pure random isn't really a cure all...lots of folks get repeatedly unlucky in those systems and I get to listen to them complain every year  :chuckle:

Beings "they are listening"

I think for the time being id like 20% preference to the top holders..maybe keep adjusting this percentage until we curb off some points  :dunno:

Smaller zones and more of them...I think most folks really only hunt a small area of each special area esp in the mtns on the west side..might need bigger areas on the east  :dunno:

More buck tag opportunities on the west side

August blackatil hunts

Less rifle blacktail days in the rut

Winter elk hoof rot hunts..dang things are literally walking skeletons until they die...so sick of watching it

Oh...and I want faster draw results  ;)

WDFW is clearly not worried about low draw odds, they just tanked them further by letting people return permits they don't want and giving them their points back.  Now I, and everyone I know apply for everything without fear of losing points in all categories.  It is the second most destructive thing they've done to draw odds next to splitting the categories in the first place.

I'll take low odds in all categories over slightly better than low odds in one category and 0% odds in others.

Setting aside a percentage for max point holders also permanently reduces the odds of everyone but the top point total or two. If 20% were set aside, your children and grandchildren would have access to 20% fewer tags in their lifetime. It would sure help the top point holder that already have the greatest chance compared to the rest, but they make up probably 2% of applicants. The other 98% would face further draw odds reduction.  Is the person with 22 points that much less 'deserving' than the person with 25 points to have the tags they're eligible for reduced 20% for their lifetime?

One thing they could do is have more hunt choices to spread applicants out.  You can't convince me they couldn't have 1 rut tag for deer and elk in every GMU and every weapon type. It wouldn't do squat to the population but would sure help out odds.  Everything could be capped at 2 hunt choices as well. Even then you put in for the long odds first choice and the better odds second.  Should really be 1 choice if we wanted to increase the odds on the best tags that most people bellyache about odds on.

Bottom line is too many people applying for too few permits.  The reality is Washington is a general tag state.  The opportunity here comes in the form of being able to hunt every year rather than special permits.  Permits need to be thought of as lottery, and accept that most people will never draw the good tags in their lifetime regardless of their points.

Man I'm wishing my son could draw something.
I've been putting him in lots of stuff the past 4-5 years.
Never drawn anything, this has got to be his year.
I would gladly give up my chance at any oil tag.
To be with him on a moose hunt.

Although I have got antlerless Colockum Elk 3 times.......20-25 years for some .......good luck! Started for Quality and Bull when you had to give up the first 2 days of general bull to even apply

I've heard nothing from her nor any other WDFW insider. I have, however, noticed that the special hunts link is back up. Hopefully that's a sign that it will be soon.

Anyone else apply for OIL tags and almost hope you don't get them because you'd have no idea what you're doing?

Still gotta put in I guess.
