2009 Duramax Filters

My Dash is telling me there is 15% life left on my Fuel Filter. I am wondering what you type filters are the go to for the Duramax?  Should I just take it to the dealership and let them do what they do? Truck has 60,000 miles on it and last fuel filter change was done right before I purchased it at 45,000 miles. Just curious, and this rig is bone stock, no upgrades or delete's.

Just use stock again......But if you think you want to switch Fleetguard, Baldwin, Donaldson, Luberfiner...............Just pay attention to what stock micron is and buy the same or smaller, smaller means changing more often, lager probability of plugging injector goes up.

Holy smokes!! 60k on an ‘09, that thing must be mint. I don’t have a duramax but do have a ‘16 ram with the 6.7 cummins, I’ve always ran fleet guard filters for the fuel, water separator and oil and had good luck. If you really want to get into the performance stuff a FASS fuel system upgrade would be the way to go, that or change the filter block out for an aftermarket setup that accepts cat filters, much cheaper and better filtration.

I have had three Duramaxs and will only run factory fuel filters. Just had very mixed results with off brand fuel filters. In my shops only factory fuel filters on all diesels unless the customer requests otherwise.

I think I will take your experience and go with it. I will just use the dealership and let them do their thing as this is one truck I do not want to screw up.

I did the conversion and use CAT fuel filters. It filters 2 micron absolute, as opposed to 2 micron nominal. Much, much better filtration than the stock filters.

Stick with Factory fuel filter. Not only is it a great filter it is also a coalescing filter that keeps water out of your fuel system. AC Delco and Racor are the same filter.

I think with that low of a milage ride you need to install a secondary fuel filter. On my dodge I use a stock filter 10 micron and then have a large spin on 2 micron. Diesel fuel is dirty and adding a secondary will make your injectors last longer. this is especially important on common rail systems.

The stock filter is a 2 micron coalescing filter. Its an excellent filter.

A/C delco for me, and I change it every other oil change. I have an 06, and add fuel additive about 3-4 times a year.

Interesting. I think on the 2003-2006 dodges its a 10 micron is what I was told, so I installed a 2 stage filtration system. If the stock is a 2 micron then some kind of prefilter that is a 10 would likely make everything last longer. I noticed my filter changes and or changes in milage were not needed as often.

Your probably right about the Dodge filters and it's probably because of the different style injectors. It also never hurts to add extra filtration.

One of the best mods a person can do to their Duramax is add a lift pump so the CP3 or CP4 don't have to suck so hard to get fuel to the system. That can be done with or without extra filtration. I have enough confidence in the stock filters on my LBZ Duramax that I added a Kennedy stand alone pump.

Would be easy to add extra filtration if I ever decided to.

+1 on the lift pump for the Duramax.

My 03 dodg had the lift pump on the frame rail  near the driver side wheel well. When it crapped out I put an in tank system in, which is what the later designs had. In tanks are a pain to change sometimes however they never lose prime or suck dry.  I cringe at the frame rail higher PSI lift pumps

One thing I learned about diesels is NEVER skip on maintenance, stick with factory and you’ll never go wrong. I also don’t believe in shops doing basic maintenance because they rape the *censored* out of you. They’ll charge you $60 to put in a $15 filter that requires a 1/2” ratchet on-top of the motor.
