Westside archery for elk
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:22:38 AM »
I'm a long time rifle hunter, taking up archery in the last two years. I'm planning to get a western archery elk license this year.  Many years ago I hunted areas in the Willapa Hills and always saw elk, but also lots of rifle hunters in the later years.  My hope is that I can find some areas with good concentrations of elk, and fewer hunters.  I don't mind hiking or biking to get away from roads.

I need to make up my mind before May 20.   Does anyone have any thoughts about westside archery?  I can hunt both the early and late seasons.  I'm not a trophy hunter: any elk is a trophy to me, especially with a bow.

Well living in sammamish you are right off the I-90 corridor.  I would look at Denny Creek/Hansen Creek area, or even somewhere off the Stampede Pass area.  Early season is more likely to have success than late.

With that said you are not a trouphy hunter I would probly look at the Margret and toutle unit for permits. A little extra effort can get you away from people and you should have a blast with lots of encounters. Good luck this year. That is just my :twocents: :twocents:

Margret and toutle will probly be hard to draw if you don't have more than a couple points. I think the winston and coweeman are good hunts if you can hike or bike in a few miles. :twocents:

if you're not a trophy hunter i don't see the need to burn your points on a westside archery tag. lots of good OTC bowhunting on this side of the hill.

I'm not planning to use points.  I am looking for a general season hunt.  Winston and Coweeman are good tips.  Thanks.

I think you'll see lots of animals and get into decent action in many of the SW Washington units. I've never been able to close the deal, but have been very close multiple times since I took up archery for elk 2 years ago.

my buddy hunts only westside archery, he has 17 bulls and a couple that ive seen are up around 360+ at least. hes also a champion caller so that helps. he's been trying to get me into bow hunting for a while and this might be my last year rifle hunting for elk
