First Chef Knives Completed
« on: June 07, 2022, 07:30:11 PM »
The first seven chef knives are done and I am very pleased with them! They all have an 8in 3/32in thick blade of AEB-L, heat treated and ground by me. These are the first knives I've been able to sandblast the tangs, which is more consistent and (hypothetically) stronger bond. Various stable handle materials and bronze pins. Most of these are original pattern with a flat machine finished grind. $240 each with free shipping. I thought I had found a system for making Kydex covers which would not scratch the blades, and so made a cover for each of these, but found the kydex will create scratches, even if it is perfectly clean. So, if you want a cover for any of these, you are free to it, but it will scratch the blade. Let me know if you are interested in one of these or one like it!

The top knife is machine finished, has a Desert Ironwood handle, and is unavailable. The bottom one is also flat ground and machine finished and has a Burnt Orange Micarta handle.

The top one is Red/White/Blue G10 and a bit shorter "santokuish" blade. The bottom knife is handrubbed, has a Desert Ironwood handle, and is unavailable.

The top knife is hollow ground and has a dyed Birch laminate handle. The bottom one is pointier (or more "French") and has a Natural Micarta handle.

Chef's knives rarely come with a sheath because they either sit in a block or the chef has a knife bag.

Yes, that's true. I thought it might be nice to have a well made cover for shipping and drawer storage. Since this didn't work, I'll probably make slip on cardboard covers to ship.

Apparently I don't know how to count. I've finished six, four of which are available. There is one more in the shop that is almost done which I must have counted.

This Chef was delayed from the previous ones as the handle needed to be oil finished, which takes a couple days. It has a flat, machine finished grind, an exhibition grade Bubinga handle, and is also available for $240. There are also pictures with text describing some of the processes I take these knives through on my FB page. Thanks for looking!

Very nice. Mr Cole, do you have a website for the non-Facebookers to browse your knives?  Thanks.

I bought one of Alden's knifes close to a year ago and I've skinned a possum, cleaned 5 ducks, and two grouse with it so far and it's still razor sharp. It's very well made and I can tell it's going to last a lifetime.
So don't hesitate to buy one of his beautiful custom knifes!

Sorry it took me so long for me to respond. Yes, I do have a website, but it is just a free one from WIX, so it is hard to find. Here is a link: https://aldgracole.wixsite.com/aldencoleknives. Thanks,
Alden

Thanks Zane! That's a good knife, I'm glad you're enjoying it! Just out of curiosity... did you eat the possum? Nice picture too.

I thought about trying to eat it but after smelling the smell that came off the critter, I decided to let carcass be coyote food.
I've heard mixed reviews on the edibility of possums so I'm sure my curiosity will get to me someday, maybe in the form of possum stew.
