Green river elk

Drew the permit for modern firearm green river unit elk in october. I remember reading some threads on here about having to talk to a company that owns a lot of the land. Just wanting a pointer in the direction of that companies name, if this is the case. Ive spent a decent bit of time in the white river unit chasing bears so i know the general area and i know what kind of bulls are in the white river unit… so id assume the same of the green river. Any info would be greatly appreciated, whether it be spots to scout or info about the company, though onx shows most of it is washington state land.

That can be a great tag, just be the first at the gate and you should do fine.

You will get an entire packet in the mail detailing everything you need. I had a cow tag in there in 2019 and my suggestion would be have a driver so you can bail out faster. There are a lot of areas to get out and hike into, but saw way more Bulls from the road. Listen to the guards they know where the Elk are! Several guys on here have hunted the unit, each one had a different experience. Best of luck, post pictures if you get a nice one!

A buddy drew the same tag. He said the access permits are sold out. His neighbor shot a nice mature 5x6 in the access area last year with this tag

It is owned by the Muckleshoots and Hancock manages it for them. Tons of Forest Service land further up.  70 rd, 73 rd. good places for elk.

Green river fellas! I know the white river unit! Lol! Ive hunted bears up off the 72 road quite a bit. The green river unit, gmu 485, is its neighbor and ive been reading old posts on here that make it sound like theres a company, maybe tacoma Water? It had the green river watershed in the unit.

Yes thats the green river watershed tag. You'll get plenty of info. Should be a great hunt. Plus after you tag out you can still hunt bears or cougars if the season is open.

I noticed in your opening post you were looking for pointers or spots to scout. Just to be clear with that tag you will not be able to scout leading up to your hunt. Access is only allowed during the days of your hunt. Good luck with your tag!

I will look through my phone and see if I can find some notes I took on my hunts in there.  I drew elk in 2017 and deer in 2010 in there.  I took a photo of the map at the guard station on my last day in there to get a general idea where all the animals were take from in that unit.  Each person who takes an animal has to mark it on the map with a red or green sticker back at the guard/check in station. Its a fun hunt

Thats pretty cool. Do i need to call their office ahead of time to let them know my info before the hunt? Or just show up at the guard shack and show them my tag and im good to go? Im trying to figure out who i need to contact prior to entering the land during the hunt. I have some questions for them. Im going to be bringing my handicapped father for a couple days and was thinking of bringing my daughter along as well. She will be 3 by then and always asks to go hunting. Those days would be truck hunting only but thats fine by me. What should my expectations be for the green river? I know the last couple days of that hunt im going to be looking for any bull pretty much but early on would like to stick to a big 5x5 minimum.

Sorry if i come off like a kid… im pretty much feel like a kid in a candy store. First time drawing anything other than multi season deer in Washington and while ive helped others get elk, i myself have never notched my tag on an elk. Helped call them in, cut em up, and drag them out though rofl!

Be first in line on opening day and hit the fields.  Most people get their elk down low, it’s not a gimme by any means. My dad and I were in there for his deer hunt a couple years ago, we only saw one spike bull, but, we were up higher and looking for deer not elk. Have fun, and if you do kill something early, you can keep going in for bear or cougar. No harvesting grouse and you will see lots.

In my opinion this hunt is not great at all. I use to work in there and seen awesome bulls but it sure seems after they started Tribal hunting it really went down hill. Still nice bulls around but they won’t be near any road probably. Good luck, hope you do good

My daughter will be 3 years old when i do this hunt. She will probably only be coming along if my father or wife are. I can spot animals… but my wife.. she can spot elk like no other. I plan on talking to the guards at the sign in spot, but would you be saying most of the elk are taken closer to the river down low or the lower elevation cuts? Im going to be shooting a custom 300 wby mag and 190 gr barnes lrx and im comfortable out to 800-900 yards if need be. We practice a lot further that that but everything will really depend on conditions and if i can get a steady rest. Days that i dont have my wife or father i will have my buddy who is ex army and we will be hiking around areas that i see on onx that look good. I know its not a gimme, no hunt ever is, but i want to maximize the time i will have for sure and try to harvest a bull.

I was in there 5-6 years ago with a buddy who had a deer tag, in 5 days we seen 6 elk, 1 small 4 point bull. Also talk to a security guards and they told me that any tags that the “white” people don’t fill they give them to the tribe. Places really gone downhill is all I know

I got drawn for the youth archery elk tag in november and have the same questions, if your hunt is in october I would greatly appreciative of how your hunt went, this is my first elk season as the primary hunter, but my dad who I am hunting with is pretty successful on the west side for elk

? Access permits ? Are u sure u know what unit he is talking about ?

I think the only benefit for getting in touch with the guys that do the security there is if you get an animal down.  They will likely give you a hand hauling it out.  I would hunt it from the Lester side, but that is the only side I am familiar with.

Also wouldn’t hurt to go up to the gate the day before the hunt and talk with the guards, see if you can give them your information ahead of time, I can’t remember if they’ll take your info then or not but it’s worth a try.

Was in there a couple of years ago with a deer tag. Poor luck for the deer hunters except for Trophy and his dad that year but the elk hunters scored big. Most are taken down low near the river. Problem is that they alternate each year as to when the tribe comes in and unfortunately the tribe will be in there before you get there. Also for elk you will have moved further away from the rut. For deer hunters they will be closer to the upcoming rut and may have better luck. The bucks were far and few and mostly young. The biggest buck I saw was a small 3 point that I passed on. I did not hunt down by the river but did see 7 bulls. They were either on the road by the river or close by. I did get see a big kitty cat for a few seconds so that is always fun.A point of caution...not sure if they are still logging in the area but if they are be aware that they come out there at all hours. One early morning in the dark I was headed in with another vehicle following close behind. Having had a couple of close calls with the trucks I noticed lights coming toward me and immediately pulled to the side. Unfortunately the guy behind me never saw the lights and went by me, straight into the bright lights of the oncoming truck with no room to pull over. How he never got hit, I will never know as there was little room on the side to maneuver with a steep hill on his side. I am sure he was an inch of rolling over the hill. Pretty sure he had to clean out his pants after that. Good luck on your hunt.

As was said you will get a packet on the mail explaining everything...unless it's changed you can only take 1 person with you in your vehicle...its a very controlled hunt with very strict rules...such as you may also harvest a bear or a cougar....nothing else such as a grouse....You will have a Great hunt/time....I may see you there as I have a cow permit there myself...Good Luck....Les
